Betlanovce combines historic buildings with natural attractions that tourists use the village as a starting point to visit. These include the gorges of Suchá Belá, Piecky, Veľký Sokol and Kláštorná roklina. In the village, architectural traces range from the medieval church and Renaissance buildings to the late Baroque curia. These offer different focal points for planning a trip: architectural history right in the village, and nature activities, each with its own conditions.

Renaissance Manor House and Local Architectural History

The Renaissance manor house in Betlanovce is the oldest Renaissance manor house in the Spiš region. It was built between 1564 and 1568. Locals call it “Korunky” because of its Renaissance gable attic. A gable attic is a raised façade finish at the gable; the local name thus refers to a specific architectural feature. The manor houses in Betlanovce are currently privately owned. Check access arrangements separately before visiting.

The Church of Saints Cosmas and Damian also tells a story of several building periods. It was already standing in the second half of the 13th century. In 1309, Pope Boniface IX granted it a plenary indulgence; it was dedicated to the two saints. Between 1731 and 1781, the church underwent extensive renovation. This makes it possible to distinguish its early history from the later major renovation. A late Baroque curia from the second half of the 18th century adds to the historic buildings. The county house is currently a cordoned-off ruin.

Natural Attractions and the Prielom Hornádu Educational Trail

Betlanovce lies on the northern boundary of the buffer zone of Slovak Paradise National Park. The village is also in the Slovenský raj Special Protection Area, designated by Decree No. 3/2011 Coll. of the Slovak Ministry of the Environment. Tourists use Betlanovce as a starting point for the four gorges mentioned above. The Prielom Hornádu Educational Trail is nearby and offers a different way to experience the landscape than navigating a gorge.

The Prielom Hornádu Educational Trail is open year-round, but may be temporarily closed due to weather or safety conditions. It is 22 kilometres long and has 16 stops with 20 information boards. Trail details may change as a result of trail management. Check the opening conditions and current route information before your visit. The length and number of stops provide specific points of reference without specifying a walking time or difficulty level.

Navigating the Hornád and Practical Conditions

Near Betlanovce, the Prielom Hornádu gorge can be navigated during the summer hiking season when conditions are favourable and water levels are sufficient. Options include single- or double-seat kayaks, canoes, inflatable boats or paddleboards. Unlike the educational trail, this activity expressly depends on the season and water conditions. Before setting out, check water levels, applicable permits and safety conditions.

The launch point for navigating the Hornád is just beyond the turn-off to Betlanovce, immediately before a bridge. Short-term parking is available there. Check in advance that parking is available and that conditions are suitable for navigating the river; both can change. This lets you plan your river activity according to the actual conditions rather than relying solely on the educational trail route description.

Cultural Events and Accommodation

The “Juniálesy pod holým nebom” developed into a tradition in Betlanovce and are usually associated with a varied programme for children and adults. Check specific dates before your trip.
