The regional routes can help you choose a hotel in Matejovce Nad Hornádom. One cycling route runs from Chrasť nad Hornádom along the red-marked trail, past Šikľavá skala, towards Matejovce nad Hornádom railway station. Another route starts at Chrasť nad Hornádom railway station, passes Farská skala and the village church, and joins a yellow-marked cycling tourist route. The routes differ in their stops: one heads towards Matejovce railway station, while the other passes the rock formation and church on its way to the yellow cycling route. If you are planning a bike ride, check the route beforehand, as the signage may change.

Rock formations and a seasonal waterfall

Farská skala is a protected natural monument with the fourth level of protection. Conglomerates and sandstones are exposed in the rock, revealing the layering and structure of sedimentary rocks. An information board in front of Farská skala describes the formation and geological composition of the rock formation. Both the types of rock and their visible layering are therefore the focus.

Another natural feature is Šikľavá skala. It lies 1.2 km west of Chrasť nad Hornádom, along a red-marked cycling tourist route. The waterfall is approximately 14 metres high and 25 to 30 metres wide. Its appearance changes with the seasons: in winter, it takes the form of an icefall or ice wall. The two rocky destinations thus differ not only in their geological or water-shaped features, but also in the waterfall’s seasonal character.

Protected-area designations add another dimension to the landscape. The Site of European Importance “Vápence v údolí Hornádu” includes the cadastral area of Chrasť nad Hornádom. Chrasť is also included in the cadastral list of the Volovské vrchy Natura 2000 protected area. The Volovské vrchy protected area comprises coniferous, deciduous and mixed forests.

Church architecture, a fresco and local history

The Church of the Most Holy Trinity is the Roman Catholic parish church in Chrasť nad Hornádom. The originally Romanesque building has a Byzantine floor plan in the shape of an equal-armed cross. Equal-armed means that the arms of the cross are designed to be the same length in the floor plan. The fresco “Vstávanie Krista z hrobu” is preserved on the northern interior wall of the church tower. The church thus offers two distinct details to explore: the shape of its floor plan and a work of art on a precisely identified interior wall.

Chrasť nad Hornádom has been documented in written records since the period after 1255. A document from 1280 refers to the settlement as Goroszt or Horoszt. Another cultural connection is the Slovak academic painter Jozef Hanula, who lived and worked in Chrasť for 18 years. Together with the parish church, these details offer different perspectives on local history: the early written record, architecture and art, and the time a painter lived and worked in the village.
