Zákamenné between the basin and the protected area

Zákamenné lies in the Podbeskydská brázda and the Zákamenné Basin. Erosion by the Klinianka and Zásihľanka streams shaped this basin. The village is also located in the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area. If you like to put your stay in context by looking at the landscape, you can distinguish between these two aspects: the basin describes the landform, while Horná Orava is the protected area in which Zákamenné lies. Other topics to consider when planning your trip include a marked nature trail, religious buildings, local culture and nature observation.

Nature trail and lookout tower

A green-marked nature trail leads from the village center past the local Calvary to the Zákamenné lookout tower. The access path to the tower is 3 km long and has an elevation gain of 150 meters. Since the nature trail passes by the Calvary, you can consider the route and the architectural ensemble as one outing. At the end stands a 15-meter-high wooden lookout tower. From there, views extend to Babia Hora, Pilsko, Oravská Magura and the Western Tatras.

The information about the route and the tower refers to different things: three kilometers and 150 meters of elevation gain describe the approach, while 15 meters is the height of the structure. The mountains named provide specific points of reference for the view. This lets you assess the outing by its length and ascent, while also knowing what to expect from the view at the tower.

Another annual outing is the winter and summer crossing over Zákamenský grúň to the summit of Úšust. Here, Úšust is the destination; the nature trail, by contrast, focuses on the lookout tower and the route past the Calvary. The two outings described therefore offer different destinations to consider when planning your trip.

Calvary and church architecture

The Calvary of Zákamenné was built in 1862. It consists of fourteen Stations of the Cross, a larger central chapel with a horseshoe-shaped floor plan, and two smaller chapels, also laid out in a horseshoe shape. The site combines the Stations of the Cross with several chapels; the central chapel is larger than the two smaller ones. A Mass of indulgence is celebrated at the Calvary every year on August 15. The site is therefore notable both for its architectural ensemble and for a recurring religious event in the annual calendar.

Another religious building is the parish church of Nanebovzatia Panny Márie, built in the Neo-Romanesque style. The Stations of the Cross and chapels characterize the Calvary, while the Neo-Romanesque style defines the description of the parish church. Those interested in the village's religious heritage will therefore find different architectural points of interest.

Heritage room and local history

The heritage room in the Zákamenné municipal office displays historical objects used by the local people’s ancestors. The men’s and women’s folk costumes of Zákamenné are also on display. Part of the exhibition is devoted to flax cultivation, linen production and linseed oil production—topics for which Zákamenné was known. The local history on display thus ranges from clothing to cultivation and production. For those interested in culture, the heritage room complements the churches and Calvary with insights into past ways of life and work.

Nature observation and trout farming

Visitors can observe roe deer up close in the wildlife enclosure in Zákamenné. Red deer, fallow deer, roe deer and mouflon live there. These species give a concrete idea of what to expect from nature observation. Visitors can also watch trout farming and catch fresh fish. These are further, distinct ways to experience Zákamenné: observe animals in the wildlife enclosure or learn about trout farming and fishing.
