Rabčice: Nature and Gorale Culture
Accommodation in Rabčice
Rabčice brings together protected landscapes and remarkable ancient trees with Gorale cultural history, cycling and regional food. If you are considering a stay, you can focus on these different themes: connections with nature, historical background, or shared cultural and culinary experiences.
Protected Areas and Ancient Trees
Rabčice lies within the Horná Orava Protected Landscape Area, in Zone D with the second level of protection. A different classification applies to the peat bogs in the Rabčické bory locality: they belong to Zone B with the fourth level of protection. The cadastral area of Rabčice is also part of a protected natural area: within the Natura 2000 network, it belongs to the Horná Orava Special Protection Area, which is significant for international bird protection. The information therefore refers to different areas and levels of protection.
Two protected trees can be readily compared by their measurements. A large-leaved lime tree stands in the cemetery and is estimated to be about 350 years old. It is 27 metres tall, has a trunk circumference of 680 centimetres and a crown 18 metres wide. At the entrance to the village, by house or cottage No. 422, stands a wych elm. It is estimated to be about 250 years old; it is 35 metres tall, has a trunk circumference of 455 centimetres and a crown 20 metres wide. Both trees have been protected since 1974. The elm is therefore taller and has the wider crown, while the lime tree has the greater trunk circumference.
Local History and Gorale Culture
The history of settlement in Rabčice dates back to before 1612. That year, Juraj Turzo acknowledged Jakub Ramža’s efforts and hardships in founding the village. This historical account thus names both a specific year and a person associated with the village’s founding.
The history of local folk groups also offers insight into the area’s cultural heritage. The Rabčičanka folk group was founded in 1973 to revive the customs of Rabčice and Gorale songs. The Kašunka children’s folk ensemble was established in 1982. At the time, children were taught the declining Gorale dialect word by word. The two groups had different focuses: Rabčičanka dedicated itself to customs and songs, while Kašunka passed the language on to children.
Cycling and a Winter Event
In October 2021, a 4.2-kilometre section of a cross-border cycling route was built in Rabčice. The route follows existing roads and passes through forest and grassland. Rabčice also has a tourist and cycling map. If you are interested in cycling, these details offer different points of reference: the length of the section built, the types of terrain along the route, and the map available.
For a winter trip, the Gorálová bežka is a distinct point of interest. Rabčice established the tradition of this cross-country skiing march in 2007. The event is held in January or February, depending on the weather. If you are planning your trip around the event, check the specific date, as the month depends on the weather.
Hands-on Regional Cuisine
The activities at Salaš u Štefana offer another way to experience Rabčice. Visitors can make their own Oštiepok there. Together with the hosts, they can also bake Moskôľ and serve it with cracklings, sheep’s cheese or blueberry jam. These activities differ from cycling and cross-country skiing in that they involve preparing food together.
Salaš u Štefana is at the upper end of Rabčice, four kilometres from the village entrance. This location information may help you plan a visit. Together with details about nature protection, trees, cultural history and a seasonal event, it shows the different themes you can consider when choosing a stay in Rabčice.
