Stredné Plachtince between Hont, history and tradition
Accommodation in Stredné Plachtince
Stredné Plachtince lies on the eastern edge of the Hont region, beside the Plachtinský potok stream, which was formerly also known as “Stará rieka”. A narrow strip of floodplain forest, with willows, poplars and alders, stretches along the stream. The landscape and local history are reflected here in both nature and architecture, as well as in traditions passed down through generations.
Landscape and Pohanský vrch
Notable natural features include the thermophilous rocky communities near Hrobárovo and at Fojtíkovo and Chvíranovo bralo. Pohanský vrch also brings together several perspectives: the archaeological site combines cultural and historical values with natural and landscape values. At the same time, the mountain is one of the ecologically significant gene-pool sites for flora and fauna.
A nature trail to Pohanský vrch and the Hornoplachtinské lazy was established in 1998. The Pohanský vrch nature trail lies on the boundary between the cadastral areas of Horné Plachtince and Stredné Plachtince; the archaeological site is along its route. These details situate the mountain in both the landscape and local history, without reducing it to a single theme.
Church and architectural history
The local Gothic Evangelical Church of St. Michael dates from the 14th to 15th centuries. A Gothic chapel is traditionally believed to have stood there as early as 1332–1337. The church was renovated between 1610 and 1621; the altar area was built in 1626, and the nave with altar in 1742. The 22-metre-high tower followed in 1832–1833. In the 17th century, the church was altered in the Renaissance style, and in 1925 it was renovated in the Neoclassical style. A wall surrounds the building.
Beside the church are the tombstones of the Dačov family and the tombstone of Samuel Godra (1807–1873), an Evangelical pastor. Godra was a poet and a representative of the Slovak national movement. Stredné Plachtince is also home to the old Dačov manor house, which later belonged to the Bende family and was renovated in the 20th century. Together, these buildings and memorials offer insight into different chapters of local history.
Museum and living traditions
The Samuel Godra Museum is housed in the old rectory and provides an overview of the history of the Plachtinsko Valley from the earliest times to the present. Its exhibits include geological samples, fragments of pottery from the Bronze Age Kyjatice culture found at the hillfort on Pohanský vrch, and other prehistoric and medieval archaeological finds. The displays therefore span natural history and traces of early settlement.
A weaving room with machinery and tools illustrates the processing of flax and hemp, from raw material to finished product. The making of the Plachtince folk costume and embroidery has also been preserved as part of local folk culture and tradition. The Bažalička folk group preserves folklore, customs, traditions and traditional dress, and regularly takes part in events in the region, elsewhere in Slovakia and abroad.
Rural architecture is also part of the village’s cultural character. Folk houses from the 19th and early 20th centuries preserve traditional forms of construction: plastered, whitewashed masonry and tiled roofs supported by wooden posts and featuring a half-hipped form. Traditional dishes from Stredné Plachtince include tenkeľová kaša, koláče, opekance and strudel, or záviny. For your travel plans, this makes Stredné Plachtince a place whose cultural themes range from architectural history and archaeology to crafts, folklore and regional cuisine.
