Dačov Lom – Folk Architecture, Church and Crafts
Accommodation in Dačov Lom
Dačov Lom is shaped by its preserved folk architecture, the history of an evangelical church and local craft traditions. Its landscape and seasonal winter sports opportunities add to this picture.
Preserved Folk Architecture
The house of Pavol Šajban, dating from 1812, is one of the few preserved folk architecture buildings in Dačov Lom. The chamber in the courtyard of the Hlivárovcov-Fodorovských family dates from 1819 and is described as the most interesting preserved example of folk architecture in the village. The dates are seven years apart and refer to different types of buildings: a house and a courtyard chamber.
The Evangelical Church
The evangelical church in Dačov Lom was originally built in the mid-13th century in the Romanesque style. Its nave received a painted wooden ceiling in 1713. A fragment of the Romanesque stone stepped portal with round shafts was incorporated into and added to the perimeter wall. The church is listed in the Central Register of the Monuments Fund of the Slovak Republic under number 610-1088/0. If you plan to visit the church, check access in advance.
Unlike the house and courtyard chamber, the church belongs to the history of sacred architecture; its Romanesque origins date back several centuries earlier than the two buildings from the early 19th century.
Crafts, Folklore and Rural Traditions
Local traditions include making traditional Hontian bobbin lace and folk costumes. Traditional crafts also include woven willow goods, wooden tools and furniture, and objects made from horn. Bobbin lace and folk costumes represent textile work, while willow, wood and horn add other materials to the range.
A folklore group has been active in Dačov Lom for many years under the leadership of Štefánia Selská. It represents the municipality at cultural events in the surrounding area and further afield. The rural tradition of raising cattle and sheep and making cheese is also part of the village’s history.
Landscape and Winter Sports
In the canyon on the slope at the western edge of the forest, east of Strážnik, within the cadastral territory of Dačov Lom, a gorge begins and leads to the western bank of the Lahoš. The lower of the two springs rising there is known locally as Meričkovka. Meričkovka is therefore the name of the lower spring, not the gorge.
Dačov Lom offers downhill skiing and two ski lifts. If you plan to include skiing in your trip, check the seasonal operation of the lifts in advance.
Practical Information
The village has a post office, a shop and a cultural center. For your trip planning, you can distinguish between the main attractions: architectural history and crafts on the one hand, and winter sports, whose seasonal availability should be checked, on the other. If you are looking for a hotel in Dačov Lom, you can plan your stay around these interests.
