Kaloša lies in the northern part of the Rimavská Basin, at the southern foot of the Slovak Ore Mountains and in the valley of the middle course of the Kaloša stream. These features provide the municipality with a geographical setting: the basin places it within the wider landscape, the mountain foothills describe its location in relation to the Slovak Ore Mountains, and the Kaloša stream identifies its valley setting. The area’s history adds another dimension to your travel plans, spanning early forms of its name, historic buildings, and documented traditions.

Local History and Buildings

Vyšná Kaloša was established at the end of the 14th century when it was separated from Nižná Kaloša. The historical name Kalosa is documented for 1427, and Felsew Kalosa for 1458. The settlement’s origins and name forms provide different points of reference for its history. In 1477, Vyšná Kaloša was first mentioned as the property of the Nádaždy family, following the name forms Kalosa (1427) and Felsew Kalosa (1458).

The historical heritage of the municipality of Kaloša includes a late-Classical Reformed church dating from 1889. Nižná Kaloša is home to a Classical manor house from the first half of the 19th century. Comparing the dates takes you from the manor house’s earlier construction period to the later-dated church, while also distinguishing between the Classical and late-Classical styles.
