Sútor lies in the basin landscape of Rimavská kotlina, in the valley of a left-bank tributary of the Rimava. The municipality is predominantly forested and hilly. Its forests include oak-hornbeam stands with beech, as well as oak and pine forests. Sútor therefore offers different points of interest when choosing a destination: a wooded hilly landscape, a designated nature reserve and tangible evidence of local history.

Landscape and Nature Conservation in Sútor

The Ťahan Nature Reserve extends across the cadastral areas of Sútor and Tomášovce. Its boundaries are identical to those of the Natura 2000 site SKUEV0363 Ťahan. It protects habitats of European importance: Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests (91G0) and oak-Turkey oak forests (91M0). Protection level 5 applies in Zone A, and protection level 2 in Zone D.

Wooded hills and forest communities shape the landscape of Sútor’s municipal territory. Ťahan is a nature reserve with its own boundaries and extends across the cadastral areas of Sútor and Tomášovce; each of its zones has a designated protection level.

Local History and the Reformed Church

Sútor is first mentioned in 1410. The settlement initially belonged to Blh Castle and later to the Muráň estate. Turkish troops ravaged Sútor in 1566–1567. Another dated record concerns local crafts: in 1828, residents made pipes and brooms. The local history thus encompasses changing territorial affiliations and a historical event, as well as a specific craft activity.

Sútor’s oldest monument is the Reformed church, built in 1810. It is a hall church with a straight-ended sanctuary and an attached tower. A report dated January 19, 2025, describes the church as a roofless ruin into which vegetation is gradually spreading. If you are planning a visit, check the situation in advance.

The bells are also part of the church’s more recent history: in 2018, a symbolic farewell service was held at the Reformed church. The bells in the tower rang for the last time; they were then taken down and brought to the grounds of the Pauline Monastery in Gombasek near Rožňava, which was undergoing renovation at the time. This account describes a specific historical moment, not a recurring event.

Folklore and Travel Planning

The Slovak Hungarian Text Folklore Archive lists two folk texts associated with Sútor under Szútor [Sútor]: “A boszorkány halála” and “Mióta nincs Szútorban jó idő?” They add another facet of local tradition to the architectural and historical evidence.

For travel planning, a published regional bus timetable with an effective date of December 14, 2025, lists stops named Sútor and Sútor, šťavica. Check the timetable for the services running on your travel date before setting off.
