Gemerček: Churches, History and Hiking Route
Accommodation in Gemerček
Want to put Gemerček into context as a travel destination? The village lies in the western part of the Rimava Basin, in the valley of a tributary of the Rimava. Two perspectives provide a sense of place: the historic buildings and memorial sites in the village, and a route that runs from Kurinec through Gemerček and on to Hodejov. This lets you assess Gemerček both by its local cultural sites and by its role in a specific sequence of stops.
History and Church Architecture
Gemerček’s origins are dated approximately to the 13th century; from 1427, the village was mentioned under the name Gwmory. These two details answer different questions: the approximate date places its origins in time, while Gwmory is a later form of the name. Two further events are associated with specific years: in 1554, Gemerček was devastated by the Turks, and in 1683 it was plundered by Polish-Lithuanian troops. In 1828, 225 people lived in 29 houses; the residents were engaged in agriculture and fruit growing. The historical perspective thus spans the approximate origins of the village to a dated snapshot of its population, homes, and livelihoods in the 19th century.
The Kostol sv. Alžbety Uhorskej is a Late Classicist church, built between 1880 and 1883. It is a filial church; specific arrangements for services may change.
In the central part of Gemerček stands a wayside chapel, a Late Classicist building dating from 1883. It has a square floor plan; a niche is set into the masonry gable, and pilasters articulate the façade. The chapel is in good condition and serves its religious purpose. The church and chapel can be compared through their shared Late Classicist classification and their different designations as a filial church and a wayside chapel.
Jewish Cemetery
The Jewish cemetery adds another historical focal point. Three limestone gravestones from the 19th century remain in their original location. Their flat shape and Hebrew inscriptions distinguish them in appearance from Late Classicist architecture. The condition of the gravestones may change. A description from January 2009 noted that access was open to everyone and that there was no wall or gate. Check local conditions before your visit.
Route Through Gemerček
A route from Kurinec reaches Gemerček along the blue-marked hiking trail to a point below Ortváň; from there, it continues along a field track. The Kurinec recreation area is listed as a point of interest along the route. From Gemerček, the route continues to Hodejov. Nearby Hodejov is home to the ruins of a medieval castle, a manor house, and a Classicist church. The route thus brings different historical building types into view: the church and wayside chapel in Gemerček, and the buildings mentioned in Hodejov.
