Dolné Zahorany combines local history with a cycling loop that passes through the village. It lies at the transition between the Rimavská Basin and the Lučenská Basin, on a tributary of the Suchá stream. The basin setting and watercourse are geographical points of reference; historic buildings and local history add cultural themes. This lets you consider nature, history, and cycling together when choosing your destination.

Location, Landscape, and Bus Connection

The underlying geology of the municipal area consists of Tertiary clays. One plant is also associated with a specific elevation: ruža ovisnutá grows in the municipal area at 260 metres above sea level. Those interested in the landscape and nature as well as the buildings will find a botanical point of interest here. Together with its location on the Suchá tributary, this provides different ways to explore the area.

IDS BBSK bus route 171 connects Rimavská Sobota, Dolné Zahorany, Veľké Dravce, and Fiľakovo. The timetable is valid from 13 April 2026. Check the times for your travel day before setting out so you can include the bus connection in your travel plans.

Local History and Buildings

Dolné Zahorany is first mentioned in 1341 under the name Hegmuky. In 1566, the settlement was devastated by the Turks. The inhabitants then founded a new settlement at a higher location. This sequence links an early form of the name with a turning point in the village’s history and the subsequent fresh start at a different, higher location.

A notable building is the Church of Saint Michael the Archangel. It is a single-nave Late Classical building dating from 1884 to 1885. Its façade incorporates Neo-Gothic elements. The two style terms refer to different features: Late Classicism describes the church building, while Neo-Gothic elements define the façade. The church is in good condition and serves its religious purpose; check its condition and access before visiting in person.

Other historic traces include a cast-iron cross from 1892 on a masonry plinth. Since 1774, the historical symbol of Dolné Zahorany has been an ecclesiastical motif. Thus, a specific cross with details of its material and plinth stands alongside an older, religiously themed local emblem. Together with the church, these different forms of local religious history can be placed in their historical context.

Cycling: Loop, Routes, and Bicycle Types

A 62-kilometre loop from Poltár to Rimavská Sobota passes through Dolné Zahorany. The route follows paved roads as well as field and forest tracks, and is suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. The 62 kilometres refer to the entire loop; Dolné Zahorany lies along the described route. When choosing a ride, you can therefore weigh the total distance, the surfaces mentioned, and the suitable bicycle types as separate considerations.
