Discover Blhovce: Nature Trails, Cycling Route and Architectural History
Accommodation in Blhovce
Blhovce offers several specific starting points for planning your trip: walks in the surrounding countryside, regional hiking and cycling routes, and historic buildings. The village lies on the left bank of the Gortva stream. You can therefore consider the village’s location, opportunities for walks, and the sequence of regional routes as separate aspects of your planning.
Walks and Hiking Map
Interesting and easy walks into the surrounding countryside are possible from Blhovce. Hiking map TM 141 “Cerová vrchovina – Lučenec” is available from Blhovce Municipal Office and includes GPS-compatible hiking routes. It also includes route times, which were updated in collaboration with the Club of Slovak Tourists. When planning, you can therefore consider the route and the stated time required together. The two details answer different planning questions: walks are an option starting directly from Blhovce; for a hiking route selected with reference to a map, GPS compatibility, and times, TM 141 is a useful guide.
Hiking Trails in the Protected Landscape Area
The Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area includes the cadastral area of Blhovce. Within the protected area, there are nine marked hiking trails, four educational trails, and three educational sites. These figures distinguish between marked hiking trails, educational trails, and educational sites, and refer to the protected area as a whole. Thus, the local walks starting from Blhovce are complemented by regional information about several categories of trails and sites. This distinction helps you separate the opportunity to walk from the village from the broader area-wide perspective.
A Regional Cycling Route
A regional cycling route runs from Hajnáčka via Blhovce and Hodejov to Jesenské. From there, it continues in the direction of Hostice and turns toward Gemerské Dechtáre before reaching Hostice. The final section passes below Ragáč through a Cerová forest and returns to Hajnáčka. In the route sequence, Blhovce lies between Hajnáčka and Jesenské; Gemerské Dechtáre is part of the further return route. Hostice serves as a directional reference, while the described route turns toward Gemerské Dechtáre before reaching it. If you use the route when planning, check its conditions and markings on site.
Historic Buildings
In the centre of Blhovce stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1901. The Church of St. Mary Magdalene adds a longer architectural history to this historical perspective: it is late Baroque and was built between 1773 and 1777, with an extension added in 1936. The statue provides a single date as a reference point, while the church has a building history that includes both its original construction period and a later extension. The term late Baroque classifies the church’s style. If you include cultural history in your trip planning, both buildings offer specific points of interest; their dates tell different parts of Blhovce’s history.
