If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Babinec, the local church architecture, the history of flax crafts and a cycling route towards Kyjatice can help guide your choice of destination. Babinec lies in the southeastern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, on a flat ridge between the Rimava Valley and the Papča stream.

Landscape between the Rimava and Papča

The area around Babinec is deforested; there is an oak forest in the northern part. This means that the open character of the deforested area and a named section of forest exist side by side. Together with the ridge between the valley and the stream, these provide specific landscape features to consider when planning your trip.

Church and bell tower

The Evangelical church is a Neoclassical building from the late 18th century. Its nave has a flat wooden coffered ceiling with rustic ornamentation in a late Renaissance-Baroque style. Stylized flowers and leaves form the decoration; the ceiling was transferred from an older building. This distinguishes the construction date of the church from the earlier origin of this furnishing.

The organ also offers a historical point of reference: it dates from 1739 and has a three-part case with Baroque acanthus ornamentation. The bell tower is also a Neoclassical building from the late 18th century, complemented by later Baroque elements. Its bell was cast in 1813 by B. Stephanides of Lučenec. The tower and bell therefore have different dates.

The cultural and social event “Stretneme sa pod Turničkou” is held regularly at the bell tower. If you would like to combine your trip with this event, check the specific event dates in advance. This will help you consider the historic building and the event separately when planning.

Flax processing and local crafts

Flax processing was one of the oldest occupations of Babinec’s inhabitants, particularly the women. The museum exhibition “Od ľanu k plátnu” introduces visitors to the tools used by the inhabitants’ ancestors to process flax for linen production. The focus is therefore not only on the finished linen, but also on the work process and the tools involved.

The history of local crafts also includes linen weaving and the making of rag rugs. In the first half of the 20th century, spindles, weaving heddles and chests made from split beechwood were also produced at home. The chests were used to store clothing and grain. These items illustrate the connection between textile work and practical household needs: the range extended from tools for processing fibers to containers for everyday supplies.

Include the bus and cycling route in your travel plans

For bus travel, the timetable for regional route 511 on the Rimavská Sobota–Kyjatice line, valid since February 1, 2026, lists the stops “Babinec, rázc.” and “Babinec, obec”. Check the latest departures before you travel. This will help you plan around the appropriate stop and connection rather than relying solely on the route itself.

For cyclists, the Teplý Vrch–Hrušovo–Kiadice route continues towards Babinec and then on to Kyjatice. The bus information lists stops and a timetable route; the cycling route gives a sequence of places. If you would like to include the route in your trip, check the current route conditions before setting off. Both provide different points of reference for planning your stay.
