Discover Stožok: Cycling routes, nature and culture
Accommodation in Stožok
In Stožok, marked cycling and hiking trails meet protected natural areas, historic buildings and leisure activities. You can focus your trip planning on different interests: cycling, nature observation, culture or activities for families. The places and topics below will help you organise these interests and plan your time in the area accordingly.
Cycling between Stožok, Javorie and Poľana
Stožok is considered a starting point for marked hiking and cycling routes towards Javorie and Poľana. A circular cycling route that starts at Masarykov dvor in Vígľaš-Pstruša also passes through Stožok. If you cycle from Masarykov dvor to Stožok, the route follows a paved cycle path that is also suitable for less experienced cyclists.
The Zvonička stands on the Hontianska cycling route, connecting a historic site with a named cycle route.
Historic buildings and a memorial
The municipality describes the Church of the Holy Family, built in 2002, as a cultural landmark of Stožok. The Zvonička dates from another period: it was built in 1863 and renovated in 1993. Together, the two buildings offer a brief overview of different construction periods; the Zvonička is also located on the Hontianska cycling route.
About 250 metres south of Stožok, beyond the Plžíkovci settlement, there is a memorial to the victims of the Second World War. It adds another historical point of interest to the buildings in the village. If you would like to combine culture and cycling, you can take the Zvonička’s location on the cycling route into account.
Protected areas, flowering season and views
The Pstruša Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Stožok in the Detva District and covers 7.36 hectares. It protects wet meadow plant communities where the endangered, protected fritillary flower occurs in abundance. At the end of April, thousands of flowering fritillaries can make the area appear red. If you would like to experience this seasonal natural spectacle, you can take the timing into account when planning your trip.
The Poľana Protected Bird Area also shapes the surroundings: it extends across almost the entire municipality of Stožok. Significant numbers of protected, endangered bird species occur there, including the red-backed shrike, quail, Eurasian wryneck and middle spotted woodpecker. The area around Stožok offers another view of the landscape, at the rocks below Chochuľka. From the south-facing viewpoint, you can see Stožok, the Zvolenská kotlina, Javorie and Ostrôžky.
Access restrictions are important at the Rohy Nature Reserve: it protects the xerothermic vegetation of the Zvolenská kotlina in Stožok, was designated in 1986 and is classified as an area without intervention. For nature conservation reasons, Rohy is not open to the public. The trails above the protected area are used by recreational athletes and hikers; these trails should be distinguished from the protected area itself.
Leisure activities for different interests
The Stožok sports and recreation complex offers a football pitch, a multi-purpose court, a beach court, bowling, a rope course and a climbing wall. There is also a shelter with a fire pit available for rent. The choice ranges from ball sports and climbing to a rentable spot with a fire pit.
At Farmársky park, families can enjoy publicly accessible encounters with domestic animals. Visitors can feed, groom and observe horses, goats, geese, ducks, chickens, dogs and cats. The park also offers interactive educational quizzes about wildlife and environmental protection. Check the current operating details before your visit.
Another nature experience is aimed at children from Stožok and neighbouring places: they walk through a forest and encounter characters from various fairy tales. This complements the animal encounters at Farmársky park with a different way to experience the surroundings, without the two activities sharing the same theme.
Plan your journey and hotel search
