The Podpoľanie Museum presents different aspects of regional culture. The “Instrumentum Excellens” exhibition showcases Slovak folk musical instruments with interactive and educational elements. In the museum courtyard, authentic carved wooden crosses from Detva, featuring traditional motifs from the Podpoľanie region, are on display. Another exhibition, “Ovce moje, ovce…” (“My sheep, my sheep…”), explores shepherding and Wallachian traditions, sheep farming, milk production and the making of bryndza in Podpoľanie. Music, woodcarving and the food culture associated with sheep farming are thus presented as distinct themes.

Regional cuisine and sightseeing

The history of cheesemaking also has a specific place in Detva: the first bryndza dairy in Slovakia was established at Vagač House in the 19th century. TIK Detva offers an experience package combining visits to sights in Detva with tastings of regional products and creative workshops with traditional craftspeople. Advance booking is required for guided tours of the town and its surroundings. Tours can include Kalamárka and Poľana and are offered with certified guides in Slovak, English and French.

Cultural monuments and history

The Kalamárka archaeological site in Detva preserves the remains of fortifications and a water cistern. At Dianiškov House, the gate and the associated folk dwelling are listed in the Register of National Cultural Monuments of Slovakia. Vígľaš Castle, in the municipality of Vígľaš in Detva District, is also designated a cultural monument. Together, these places show different aspects of cultural heritage: archaeological traces, listed folk architecture and a designated castle.

Rock formations and hiking trails

Melichova skala, a protected natural monument, lies above Skliarovo. The column-like rock formation is about 30 metres high and is a remnant of the edge of a lava flow. It can be reached via a hiking trail from Skliarovo, Murínovci bus stop. Its approximate height, distinctive shape and geological origins give visitors a tangible connection to the landscape.

The approximately five-kilometre-long Mikuláš Esterházy educational trail opened in Detvianska Huta in Detva District. It can be explored on foot or by bicycle, and some sections are also accessible by car. Several stops offer panoramic views of Poľana, the Kremnica Mountains and part of the Štiavnica Mountains. Its length, travel options and viewpoints provide different ways to plan your own outing.

Recurring events may also be useful to consider when planning your trip.
