Kriváň lies at the transition between Javorie and the Slovak Ore Mountains, at the foot of Poľana in the Zvolen Basin. The town is considered a gateway to the Podpoľanie region. Religious art, memorial sites, trails and landscapes offer several distinct ways to experience a stay here. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on local history, outdoor activities or the region’s natural surroundings.

Church Art, Monuments and Living Traditions

The Roman Catholic Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius was consecrated on 9 July 1995. Father Emil Prokop SVD painted the church’s altarpiece and created fourteen stained-glass windows depicting the Stations of the Cross. The consecration, the artist and the religious subject give the church a clear cultural and historical context: it can be understood both through its date of construction and its works of art.

The memorial sites also represent different chapters in the town’s history. In the park beside the cultural centre stands a monument erected in 1964 to the victims of the Slovak National Uprising and the liberation. At the railway station, a monument erected in 1947 commemorates the victims of the bombing of the tunnel on 25 February 1945. The Hostinca u Gáboríkov building dates from 1922. Together with the opening and equipping of the railway station on 18 June 1871, these sites form a timeline connecting railway history, architecture and remembrance.

In Kriváň, folk costumes and folk music traditions are kept alive. Carved roadside crosses are numerous and are considered part of the local, regional and national cultural heritage of Podpoľanie. Some crosses may have been relocated or restored. Events also contribute to cultural life: the 18th edition of the international children’s folklore festival Deti pod Poľanou took place from 19 to 21 June 2026, including in Kriváň; future venues may differ. The Krivánsky jarmok brings the festivities in Kriváň to a close.

Landscape and Trails Around Kriváň

The landscape also has a geological history. A quarry was once located on Mních above Svrčkovci; extraction ceased in 1938. Baňa na Voliarkach is also a former quarry, where gravel was extracted, and is considered a geologically notable site in Kriváň. On the southwestern edge of the municipality, the Liešňa stream forms a local biocorridor and also marks the eastern boundary of the Poľana Special Protection Area. In the broader context of Podpoľanie, you can also visit Poľana: the extinct volcano is designated as a protected landscape area and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Mních is accessible year-round; parking is available in Kriváň, from where you can continue on foot or by bicycle. An officially marked hiking trail leads from Kriváň via Svrčkovci to Mních. A hiking trail through Kriváň branches off to the Lourdes Chapel on the hill near Voliarky. Cycling routes also pass through the town. The trails mentioned can be distinguished by their destinations: Mních and the Lourdes Chapel offer different points of orientation, while the cycling routes provide another way to explore Kriváň.
