Riečka: Churches, Architecture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Riečka
Riečka offers travellers two specific themes to consider when choosing a destination: a rich history of religious and rural architecture, and the Riečanské Vrchy, with a viewpoint and hiking routes. The church, chapel, memorial room and trails offer different perspectives on the village. This means you can discover Riečka through both its architecture and its landscape and the routes described here.
Churches, Architecture and Memorial Room
The late-classical Catholic church in Riečka was built in 1858. It houses a folk-style Pietà statue that was brought here from a dilapidated roadside chapel. This artwork connects the church with the history of another religious site. The Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, built between 1790 and 1792, is also located in the cadastral area of Riečka.
The original statue in this chapel was badly damaged by vandalism in 1953. Today, the chapel houses a statue from the church in Riečka. The history of the two sites can therefore also be explored through the transferred statue: the Pietà in the church and the statue now in the chapel have different connections to Riečka’s religious history.
Folk architecture is also part of the village’s character: Riečka has preserved numerous buildings of this architectural style from the 19th century. The memorial room, set up in part of House No. 126, offers another perspective. Its exhibits come mainly from residents’ private collections. The collection complements the churches and historic buildings with a look at local keepsakes. If you would like to visit the memorial room, check in advance whether and when visits are possible.
The Riečanské Vrchy and Hiking Routes
The Riečanské Vrchy are located in the Kremnica Mountains. There is a viewpoint there that is a destination for tourist excursions. Hikes to the Riečanské Vrchy are organised in both summer and winter; traditional hikes also include one at the end of the year. If you would like to plan your stay around a hike, check the specific dates in advance.
The Barborská cesta also provides guidance through its route sections: an alternative hiking route leads from Uľanka via Riečanské sedlo to Riečka. From Riečka, a marked alternative section continues to Tajov.
Near Prameň Pátra Mateja, in the vicinity of Riečka, there is a public rest area beside a hiking trail leading to Riečka. The area has also served as a venue for a community gathering. If you plan to use the rest area or trail, check their condition before your visit.
A glimpse into the history of work
Riečka’s historic economy also included day labourers working in the smelting works of Tajov and Banská Bystrica, as well as in the surrounding mines. This connection adds the region’s smelting and mining industries to the history of the churches and preserved folk architecture.
