When planning a stay in Poniky, you can shape your choices around two themes: sacred art and folklore, or karst landscape and trails. The town’s history dates back to a church built in the first quarter of the 14th century; at the same time, local customs are presented by ensembles.

Cultural History and Folklore

The church in Poniky was built in the first quarter of the 14th century. Its frescoes with Franciscan motifs were created in two main phases: around 1380 and in 1415. These dates give the wall paintings a distinctive art-historical depth. Visits are free of charge by prior telephone arrangement. Call ahead to confirm the visit arrangements.

At Ponický dom, a permanent exhibition is dedicated to the folklore and cultural history of Poniky. Another exhibition introduces the writer and poet Štefan Žáry. This lets you shift your focus from historic rooms to local traditions and an individual literary figure. The two themes complement each other without requiring you to plan around an event date.

Many customs have been preserved in Poniky to this day. The Poničan folklore ensemble and a children’s folklore ensemble present these traditions; if current performances are important to your travel plans, check in advance. Music is also part of this cultural picture: the fujara and six-holed shepherd’s flutes have been preserved in the area. The fujara is decorated with engravings and burned-in ornaments. The production of home textiles also has a long tradition in Poniky. Together, these examples show different expressions of the local cultural heritage.

Karst Landscape and Trails

West of Poniky lies Ponický kras, a karst area covering approximately four square kilometres. Karst features such as sinkholes and blind valleys occur in and around Poniky. Those wishing to explore the landscape will find this a different focus from visiting historical and cultural sites.

In the NPR Ponická dúbrava National Nature Reserve, sessile oak grows especially in challenging terrain. The Hradisko educational trail offers a specific way to set aside time for a hike: it is 2.3 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and takes about an hour and a half. The self-guided loop is open year-round and can be walked in either direction. Check the route details locally before setting out.

For cyclists, the green cycling route 5558 runs from Ponická Huta via Poniky to Šalková. Poniky is also considered an important mushroom-picking area. Since this is a seasonal activity and local access conditions must be observed, check them before collecting mushrooms.

Planning Around Events

The “Ponickými kiarmi” cycling hill climb took place for the tenth time on 13 September 2025. The 11th edition was announced for 2026. The “Zdola ponickýho mlyna” children’s folklore festival is also part of the events calendar: its 28th edition took place on 13 June 2026. If you would like to combine your trip with a race or festival, check the dates before planning your stay around them. This will help you decide whether to focus your trip on folklore, a sporting event, or Poniky’s landscape and cultural experiences.
