Banská Bystrica: City History, Museums and Trails on Urpín
Accommodation in Banská Bystrica
The following topics offer practical pointers to help you plan your trip.
Places of remembrance and historic city
On 29 August 1944, the Slovak National Uprising was declared in Banská Bystrica as armed resistance against the fascist occupation. The Historical Walk begins at Námestie SNP, by the clock tower. Along Národná ulica, it takes in the Štátna opera building and Hotel Národný dom. The walk thus leads from a central square to named buildings on another of the city’s streets.
Another historic highlight is Urpínska kalvária. It consists of eight stations, a chapel, a church standing on the hill, a tree-lined avenue and a small monastery. The description of the ensemble names both individual buildings and the stations and avenue. It is therefore a distinct cultural attraction alongside the city walk and the museum collections.
Medený hámor: industrial history and protected buildings
Medený hámor is a technical monument in Banská Bystrica of international importance. The complex operated continuously for nearly 500 years, from 1496 to 1991. Its long operating history is complemented by a specific overview of what remains today: the complex currently comprises four protected buildings: “Hiarty”, “Dielne”, “Výrobné haly” with laboratories and electrolysis, and the “Vodný náhon”. If you are interested in industrial history, you will find both a story spanning a long period and named components of the complex here.
Museums: city history and collections
Thurzov dom is a three-storey burgher’s palace dating from the early 16th century and is now home to the Stredoslovenské múzeum. The permanent exhibition Tranzithistory presents the development and history of the house, the city of Banská Bystrica and the region. More than 2,000 objects from the collections of archaeology, history, numismatics, ethnology and fine art are on display in the permanent exhibition. The focus thus extends from the building and its history to a range of collection areas. Before visiting, check the current visitor arrangements; exhibition content may be updated.
Another exhibition focuses on the nature of the Banská Bystrica region: Príroda stredného Slovenska, arranged by theme at Tihányiovský kaštieľ, uses plant and animal exhibits to present a picture of the region’s natural environment. This gives it a different focus from the city and collection history at Thurzov dom. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural and historical themes and natural history.
Trails on Urpín and stages of the Barborská cesta
The Serpentíny Urpín educational trail is 3.6 kilometres long, takes about two and a half hours and is rated easy to moderate. Banská Bystrica-Mesto railway station, also known as “Malá stanica”, is located below Urpín and serves as a starting point for the winding trail up Urpín. Rail services and station arrangements can change, so check current information if you plan to use the station. Trail conditions can also change.
The Barborská cesta starts and ends in Banská Bystrica and is divided into nine stages. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle; check the surface and operating conditions before setting out. The two routes offer different approaches to planning: the educational trail is described by its length, approximate duration and difficulty, while the Barborská cesta is described by its stages and the ways it can be travelled. You can weigh up whether a single route with an estimated duration or a route divided into stages better suits your travel plans.
