Medzibrod – Nature, Culture and History
Accommodation in Medzibrod
Medzibrod Between River and Forest
Medzibrod combines river scenery and protected nature with tangible evidence of its local history. The Máčková Nature Reserve lies north of the town; the parish church and chapel are further historical landmarks. If you are looking for a hotel in Medzibrod, you can use the area’s nature and culture as a guide when planning your trip.
The Hron runs along the eastern and southern sides of Medzibrod; the Vyvieranica and Močiar streams flow into it. The part of the cadastral area north of the Hron belongs to the NAPANT protected area. Forests cover almost 60 percent of the cadastral area.
The Máčková Nature Reserve covers 42.23 hectares. Numerous pasqueflowers grow there, and forest-steppe and near-natural beech forest communities have also been preserved. The lady’s slipper is considered a characteristic plant of Medzibrod’s flora and blooms in natural beech forests on limestone. Two different scales are useful for understanding the area: Máčková is a protected area north of the town, while the forest cover refers to the entire cadastral area. The figures therefore describe different areas.
Cycling and Nature
A cycling route passes through Medzibrod and connects the town with Hiadeľ, Brusno and Pohronský Bukovec. If you include cycling in your trip plans, check the route details before setting off, as they may change.
Churches and Local History
The parish church in Medzibrod was built of stone in the Rococo style in 1790 and consecrated on May 16, 1791. The church has an organ loft, a mechanical tower clock and three bells. The organ underwent major restoration in 2008. The artist Ladislav Cserba created eight stained-glass windows for the church in 2008 and 2009. The church’s construction and consecration thus date to the late 18th century, while the restoration and stained-glass work mentioned here took place in 2008 and 2009.
The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk was built as a votive chapel in 1808. It commemorates the rescue of residents living by the Hron from ice that had jammed in the river. The name Medzibrod is also associated with a historical location between fords. Medzibrod is also home to a water tower used to fill steam locomotives. The parish church and chapel offer different historical points of interest: the church’s architecture and furnishings take centre stage, while the chapel is notable for the reason it was built.
Culture in the Town
The Medzibrodské kočovné divadlo mainly stages Slovak and international classics with a comic character. For travellers interested in theatre as well as the landscape, the ensemble is another cultural point of interest.
The Haruľová šou is held every year in September, although some editions may be cancelled. Teams compete for the Haruľa of the Year, accompanied by an extensive cultural programme and side events. The event also includes a competition for the longest potato peel. If you are planning your trip around the Haruľová šou, check the exact event dates in advance.
