Local history and crafts

The first written mention of Povrazník dates from 22 May 1424. At the time, the settlement was listed under the name Powraznik among the villages belonging to the Ľupča estate. The history of Povrazník is closely linked to mining. One local craft was rope-making: residents specialised in making ropes, which were supplied mainly to the mines of Ľubietová, Špania Dolina and Staré Hory.

Historical rope-making is also documented through specific working methods. Below Brezina, on the road to Majer, there are three large rocks, each weighing about one tonne. Their centrally placed holes are about 15 to 20 cm in diameter. Pegs were secured in the holes; long bundles of hemp threads were twisted from rock to rock and braided into ropes used to lower miners into the pits.

Weaving and traditional dress are also part of local history. Linen and rag rugs were still being woven in Povrazník until the mid-20th century. The village’s traditional dress belongs to the Poniky variant of the Detva type.

Buildings and the municipal museum

Log house No. 59 dates from 1880 and is listed as a cultural monument. A memorial plaque to General Dr M. R. Štefánik was unveiled at the bell tower in 1928. The tower contains a small bell dating from 1745 and a large one from 1792. Its construction combines a masonry ground floor with a timber-framed upper floor clad in boards.

The Povrazník municipal museum opened in 2008. It contains restored exhibits, most of which were collected by local residents. The museum includes a room dedicated to folk traditions, a classroom, and a collection of televisions and radios. Its exhibits offer insight into local everyday and cultural history.
