Get to know Hiadeľ through its village customs, memorial sites and local food culture. Several celebrations are relevant when planning a trip, with dates tied to specific days or seasons.

Celebrations and Customs Throughout the Year

The annual Hody na sv. Františka takes place on the Sunday closest to 4 October. A communal agape follows a holy mass. The date offers a clear reference point for planning, but you should still check the current schedule before your trip.

The International Firefighters’ Day is observed in Hiadeľ every year on 4 May. The programme is specifically aimed at children and also includes a firefighters’ competition with teams from neighbouring municipalities. The event thus combines a children’s programme with a competition centred on firefighting.

May trees in front of houses are among the Pentecost customs that have been preserved; a decorated tree is also put up in the village square. The St John’s bonfire takes place on the weekend after St John’s Day: people gather around a large fire and celebrate the beginning of summer. The exact date may vary, so it is worth checking the latest event dates.

During Carnival, masked members of the volunteer fire brigade and other volunteers sing as they parade through the village, accompanied by an accordion player. In the evening, a disco is held for the community. The exact programme details may change.

St Nicholas Day and the Christmas market take place in early December at the community hall. Activities for children include decorating gingerbread and making Christmas decorations. Homemade products are also on offer, such as scented candles, Christmas wreaths, Christmas ornaments and wooden products. Christmas refreshments include gingerbread, sweets and punch, with or without alcohol. Dates, programmes, products and refreshments may vary from year to year, so check the latest information in advance.

Annual wreath-laying ceremonies organised by the local branch of the Slovak Union of Anti-Fascist Fighters are held at two memorial sites in Hiadeľ and the surrounding area. The dates are set for 24 March and 29 August, but may be adjusted in individual cases. If you plan to travel for a ceremony, confirm the current date in advance.

Krumplovník and Local Food Culture

Krumplovník is a traditional dish made from potatoes and flour that was already prepared in Hiadeľ by people’s great-grandparents. It is baked and can be sampled at the recurring community celebration Hiadlovský Krumplovník in the second half of September. This brings together a dish passed down through generations and a specific event. If you would like to include the celebration in your travel plans, check the current date and programme beforehand.

Memorial Sites and Cultural History

The Chapel of St Francis is late-classical in style and was built between 1847 and 1856. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Check its current condition and access arrangements before visiting.

A plaque on a school building commemorates the fact that, during the Slovak National Uprising, it temporarily housed A. S. Yegorov’s partisan headquarters and a military field hospital. The plaque links the building to two distinct historical uses from that period.

The DHZ Hiadeľ memorial room displays numerous awards, winner’s trophies, medals and diplomas. The exhibits also include firefighters’ protective clothing with a helmet and breathing apparatus. If you would like to visit the memorial room, check the opening arrangements in advance.

Traditional folk clothing is also part of Hiadeľ’s cultural history: it belonged to the Central Slovak variant of the Detva–Podkonice type. Houses No. 104 and No. 110 are currently designated as protected buildings.

Educational Trail and Nearby Sites

Near Hiadeľ, the Moštenické hradisko is located on the summit of Hradište. Based on ceramic finds at the site and in its surroundings, it is dated to the Late Bronze Age. This archaeological site adds a much earlier period to the more recent history of the village.

Clicking the individual markers on the map of the Hiadeľ educational trail provides information about the corresponding information boards. The condition of the boards may change. The Hiadeľská Kyslá also emerges at two points in the surrounding area.
