Rivers and fortress as points of reference

Belgrade lies at the confluence of the Sava and Danube and is considered a gateway to the Balkans and an entrance to Central Europe. In the city center, the rivers meet below Kalemegdan, at the foot of the Belgrade Fortress near Kula Nebojša. The riverside location and this specific point of reference give the city a clear geographical orientation.

The Belgrade Fortress complex covers just under 60 hectares and consists of the Upper Town, Lower Town and Kalemegdan Park. Its history spans around 2,000 years and includes Roman, medieval and modern layers of an artillery fortress. The site can therefore be understood through its three areas and several historical periods. Topčider Park offers a different point of reference: the City of Belgrade designated it a natural monument in 2015.

At Belgrade Waterfront, long promenades run along the river, making them ideal for leisurely walks. The Belgrade Tower houses an observation deck with a 360-degree panoramic view. The riverside promenade and the all-round view offer different perspectives as you plan your city visit.

Museums, memorial sites and architecture

The museums have distinctly different focuses. The Nikola Tesla Museum is the only museum that preserves Nikola Tesla’s original personal effects. The National Museum’s permanent exhibition spans from the Paleolithic era to 20th-century art and extends across three levels with 5,000 square meters of exhibition space. This places Tesla’s personal effects alongside a chronological exhibition covering a broad timespan.

The memorial center in Belgrade associated with Josip Broz Tito historically comprised ten buildings and a sculpture park. The Residence of Prince Miloš combines Balkan and Oriental styles. These present different cultural themes side by side: the historical form of a memorial center and a specifically named combination of architectural styles.

Belgrade Zoo is home to more than 2,000 animals from 200 species in its current site. These figures add a distinct focus alongside the museums and historical sites: animal species and population, rather than art, history or personal heritage.
