For travelers interested in sacred architecture and local history, Nemenikuće offers several distinct points of interest: the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, Kastaljan Monastery, the Borikić Watermill and the Cleopatra Fountain.

Church and Tradition in Nemenikuće

The historic church in Nemenikuće was built in 1708. Following its restoration in 1832, services have been held there continuously ever since. The present-day church building was completed in 1868 and dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul. The building’s history therefore encompasses several dates: the construction of the historic church, its restoration and the completion of the present-day building.

The “Dani Milovana Vidakovića” event traditionally takes place on Petrovdan in the churchyard of the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Nemenikuće on Kosmaj. One specifically dated program item took place in 2024: the program concluded with an exhibition by the “Nemenikuće 2024” artists’ colony in the churchyard. The traditional date and this past program describe different aspects of cultural life at the church site.

Kastaljan Monastery: Architecture and Excavations

Kastaljan Monastery is located on the eastern slope of Kosmaj, in the Nemenikuće area. Its church is a single-nave stone building, 12.5 meters long and 6 meters wide. A semicircular apse adjoins it to the east, and a rectangular narthex to the west. Dedicated to Saint George the Great Martyr, the monastery is now in ruins. The details of the plan, orientation and dimensions give the monastery church a distinctive architectural profile.

Archaeological excavations between 1969 and 1971 uncovered a complex comprising a church, a konak, a refectory and remains of a necropolis. The findings therefore extend beyond the church building itself to include communal areas of the monastery complex and traces of a necropolis. Historically, the konak provided accommodation for caravans and travelers, who did not have to enter the monastery grounds. This former function is part of the site’s history and should be distinguished from present-day hotel offerings.

Watermill, Fountain and Protected Area

Built in 1884, the Borikić Watermill in Nemenikuće is one of the major protected cultural heritage sites in the area and the wider Kosmaj region. The “Living Watermill” program was scheduled to take place at the mill on September 20, 2024, at the foot of Kosmaj, at 5 Vuka Karadžića Street. This date refers to that specific program item; it is not an indication of a current event date.

The Cleopatra Fountain is another landmark connected to local history. It was built in 1856 on the orders of Prince Aleksandar Karađorđević, in gratitude to the girls and residents of Nemenikuće. Its precise year of construction and the recorded reason for its creation distinguish this memorial site from the religious buildings and the watermill’s industrial history.

Parts of the Nemenikuće cadastral area lie within the protected “Kosmaj” area. Its northern boundary runs, among other places, by the church in Nemenikuće and the Trnava River. This gives the local history a specific geographical connection to the protected area: the church is both a religious site and a landmark on its northern boundary.
