Sâg is a destination for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. The Tusa–Barcău landscape reserve is located within the commune; there are also three marked routes with different distances and stated durations. Izbucul Mare and Izbucul Mic are also connected to the Barcău River as its sources. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider the protected area, the landscape, and the length of time a hike takes as distinct priorities.

Natural Landscape and Protected Area

The commune of Sâg lies in the foothills of the Plopiș Mountains, at the meeting point of Sălaj, Cluj, and Bihor counties. The Tusa–Barcău landscape reserve is located within the administrative area; it is a protected area of national interest in IUCN Category IV. It overlaps with the Tusa–Barcău Natura 2000 site and includes Asperulo-Fagetum beech forest habitats.

The designation identifies the protected status, the overlap indicates the Natura 2000 connection, and Asperulo-Fagetum names the specific beech forest habitat. The regional location and the reserve’s features complement one another but answer different questions: the county boundaries help locate Sâg, while the reserve’s features specify its nature conservation significance. This makes it possible to place the area both geographically and in terms of its protected habitats.

Platoul Ponor with Piatra Ciutei is a particularly appealing landscape area. Izbucul Mare is one of the Barcău’s main sources, and Izbucul Mic is another important source of the same river. Izbucul Mare also appears in the name of the Tusa–Toplița–Izbucul Mare–Culmea Ponorului hiking trail. This connects the source with one of the named hiking options.

Compare Hiking Routes by Distance and Time

The Tusa–Toplița–Izbucul Mare–Culmea Ponorului hiking trail is marked with a yellow triangle, is 13 km long, and is listed as taking five hours. The Sâg–Rubin–Păstrăvăria Izvoarele Barcăului–Valea Boului trail has a red triangle marker; it is 16 km long and is listed as taking six hours. The Sârbi–Siculești–Cuptoare–Ponor–Piatra Craiului hiking trail is also marked in red, is 20 km long, and is listed as taking ten hours.

To help choose a duration, compare the distances: the second route adds three kilometres and one hour to the first; the third adds four kilometres and four hours to the second. Therefore, consider both the distance and the stated duration when weighing how long a hike will take. The yellow marker identifies the 13 km route, while the two longer trails are marked in red. For the red routes, the names, distances, and stated durations also help distinguish them.

Road Connections for Orientation

DJ 191D connects Ciucea, the E60, Sâg, Nușfalău, and DN 1H. The road network also includes DJ 191E, which connects Sâg with Crasna and, via DJ 191C, with Zalău. The routes are distinguished by the places and roads mentioned: one lists Ciucea and Nușfalău, while the other lists Crasna and the route to Zalău via DJ 191C. Use these names to help find your way when travelling, and check current road conditions before setting out.
