Rus offers a variety of themes for planning a trip: an Orthodox stone church with a long history, archaeological settlement sites from different periods, and rock formations between Rus and Buzaș. The history of the church and monastery appeals to those interested in cultural history; the settlement sites offer insights into different periods. Road connections and a route to limestone formations are also relevant for finding your way around the wider area.

Church history across several periods

The Orthodox stone church “Sfinții Arhangheli Mihail și Gavril” was built in 1894 and was originally Greek Catholic. Its history at the same site goes back further: until 1709, a wooden parish church stood there. These details distinguish the predecessor building from the present church and its later religious history. Work on the interior is also part of its development: an iconostasis was made during renovation work from 2008 to 2010. Thus, the former wooden building, the 19th-century stone church, and a later change to the interior furnishings stand side by side at one location.

Archaeological settlement sites

The sites near Rus point to different periods. Rus – “Șesul lui Măican” is a settlement site from the Bronze Age and the Early Middle Ages, including the 8th to 10th centuries AD. “Șesul Pietrei” is classified as a prehistoric settlement site. At Rus – “Peștera,” by contrast, the focus is on the Roman period: the site is a Roman settlement where traces of a possible Roman quarry have been identified. The quarry remains a possible interpretation; the classification as a settlement site refers to the location itself. Those interested in archaeology will therefore find more than a single historical period in Rus.

Rock formations and a route in the wider area

The rock formations of Stanii Buzașului lie along the road between Rus and Buzaș. The hollow Căldărușii is associated with them: according to local legend, it is connected with the outlaw Pintea. This story is part of folklore and is not a verified historical attribution. A separate feature is Route 15 to the limestone formations “Peșterile lui Pintea,” which runs through the wider area around Rus. It leads from Ileanda to Dăbăceni, crosses the Someș by ferry at Buzaș, passes through Buzaș, and then follows the local road between Buzaș and Rus. The stated duration is four hours. You can take this duration into account when planning your schedule and check the ferry times in advance.

The Someș, natural surroundings and road access

Among the species recorded in the Cursul Mijlociu al Someșului protected area are the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), the white stork (Ciconia ciconia), and the lesser spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina). This information about species applies to the protected area, not solely to the center of Rus. The roads also provide different ways to orient yourself: County Road DJ 108S provides access to Rus from DN1C and also connects Rus with the commune of Șimișna. County Road DJ 109E connects Fodora, Rus, Buzaș, and Lozna in the direction of DN1H at the Ciocmani bridge and runs parallel to the course of the Someș. Together with Route 15, these details offer different reference points for planning, without equating the road connections with a specific travel time.

Monastery history and religious customs

The founding of the “Sfânta Maria-Rus” monastery began in 1997 under the leadership of Mother Maria Terheș. The “Sfânta Maria” monastery lies on a terrace above the Someș in the Răfeni agricultural area and is accessible from the national road. At a spring patronal feast at the monastery in Rus, a Divine Liturgy and a blessing of the waters were celebrated on April 17, 2026; many worshippers attended. This specific feast date should be distinguished from the recurring custom of Ciocotă. A 2016 account describes Ciocotă as an annual competition in which men break red eggs on the first day of Easter after attending church. For culturally minded travelers, this offers both the town’s longer history and religious customs clearly associated with specific dates.
