Băicoi lies at the transition between the Carpathian foothills of the Prahova bend and the Ploiești Plain, along Romania’s DN 1 national road. This gives the town a clear context through both its location and specific local features. These include the lakes near Valea Stelii, churches with varied architectural and artistic histories, and the beginnings of oil extraction in Țintea. For travelers choosing a stay based on landscape and local history, the town brings together a clear geographic setting and several cultural and historical points of interest.

Location and Lakes near Valea Stelii

Two bodies of water of different sizes and types are located near Valea Stelii. The salt lake Seninu has a surface area of 1,515 m² and a depth of 1.20 to 1.50 m; its water has a high content of chlorine, iodine and bromine. The nearby sapropelic mud lake is significantly smaller, at 228 m², and is 0.8 m deep. Seninu therefore has more than six times the surface area of the mud lake and is deeper.

Both lakes were prepared for treatments because of their mineral content and the organisms living in the mud. This led to the development of an area for balneary tourism. The lakes are therefore part of not only the landscape but also the history of local tourism.

Churches and Architectural History

The “Sf. Anton și Sf. Împărați” Church was built by Cleopatra Trubetzkoi and is listed as No. 2371 in the list of historical monuments. The “Sfinţii Împăraţi” Church was endowed by Cleopatra Trubeţkoi between 1848 and 1853. It preserves imperial icons and twelve Prăznicare, painted by Nicolae Grigorescu. After the painting was completed, it was consecrated in 1853 and opened for worship by the faithful.

Biserica Cioara in the Dâmbu district is a plastered wooden building erected around 1790 as a place of prayer. Another architectural context is the boyar manor associated with Cleopatra Trubețkoi: it was built between 1838 and 1845 in the Neoclassical style. Its chapel was built in the Neo-Gothic style. The years 1787 and 1828 are given for the chapel; today, it is in ruins. The contrast between the Neoclassical manor and the Neo-Gothic chapel brings two different styles together.

Oil History and a Cycling Tour

The industrial history also has a specific place and date: oil extraction by drilling began in Țintea in 1864. This early chapter adds another theme to the local past alongside the history of church architecture.

A route description published in 2024 takes cyclists from Florești through Păulești and other places in Prahova County to the churches of Băicoi. If you include this tour in your plans, check the current route before setting out.
