Ceraşu: Mountain Scenery, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Ceraşu
Ceraşu is a submontane settlement in a landscape shaped by mountain ridges and peaks. The surrounding heights include Vârful lui Crai, Clăbucetul, Leurdeanul, Căprioru and Chimniți. The landscape, hiking trails and historic sites offer distinct focal points for planning your trip. The place and route names below can help you distinguish between these interests.
Landscape and Nature Around Ceraşu
North of Ceraşu, the landscape is characterized by montane features. The vegetation there is dominated by spruce, fir and beech. This information adds a closer look at the northern part of the area to the picture of the submontane settlement.
Two nature reserves are also associated with places in the area: a bear and wild boar reserve is located in the village of Valea Borului, and a fauna reserve in the village of Valea Lespezii. The place names are important for orientation, as each reserve is associated with a different village. The information describes the reserves, not a specific visitor access point.
Hiking Trails and Different Destinations
The tourist route from Slon passes through the Teleajen Subcarpathians, follows the Drajna River, crosses the Tătaru Mountains and goes over Dealul Grohotișului. Hikes towards Vârful lui Crai and the valley of the Basca River are also offered in the Ceraşu area. This places a named peak and a river valley side by side as distinct hiking destinations.
Vârful lui Crai is listed at an altitude of 1,473 metres; the figure may vary slightly depending on the measurement source. A separate route description leads from Măneciu to Tabla Buții and describes a pass between the Ciucaș Mountains and the Tătaru Mare ridge. The Măneciu–Vârful lui Crai–Tabla Buții hiking trail is marked with a blue cross.
The following routes are also designated as tourist hiking trails: Cerașu–Ciuga–Vf. Craiu–Tabla Buții, Cerașu–Ciuga–Schinda–Boncuța–Valea Stânii and Cerașu–Valea Lespezii–Stângaciu–Gămălie. Today, access to Pasul Tabla Buții is via forest roads and tourist trails. Check local trail conditions before setting out on a specific hike.
Fortifications and Historic Traces
The medieval fortress “Cetatea medievală de la Slon – La Ciuga” is located in La Ciuga, in the village of Slon, within the administrative unit of Ceraşu and the Dealul Grohotișului area. The tourist route also includes the medieval La Cinga fortification, dating from the 9th century, and the Tabla Buții fortress, dated to the 13th to 16th centuries. These dates provide an indication of the different historical classifications of the two structures.
At Pasul Tabla Buții, there are trenches, shelters and shell craters from battles fought there; the Heroes’ Cemetery is also located there. These traces and the cemetery are another historical point of interest alongside the medieval fortifications. Ceraşu also has houses with traditional architecture. The condition of the buildings may vary from one house to another.
The Teleajen and Fishing
The Teleajen River is of particular interest for fishing and has a population of brown trout. If fishing is part of your travel plans, check the applicable regulations and conditions beforehand. This way, you can take this activity into account when planning without confusing it with the hiking destinations or historic sites.
