Comarnic connects the DN1, historic buildings and trails in the surrounding area. The national road passes through the town and connects Ploiești with Brașov. When planning your trip, you can explore different interests: local history, cultural events and activities on foot or by mountain bike.

Posada and the History of the Town

The Muzeul Cinegetic al Carpaților Posada is located in the Posada district of Comarnic, on the left bank of the Prahova and beside the DN1. It is about 4 km from Sinaia. The museum was established in 1996 as a department of the Muzeul Național Peleș and is housed in Martha Bibescu Castle in Posada-Comarnic.

The town’s buildings also tell different chapters of its history. The Schitul Lespezi near Posada is a monument of 17th-century Romanian feudal art; its frescoes were painted by Pârvu Mutu. The hermitage is situated in a forest at the foot of Pleșuva Mică, on the left bank of the Prahova. The Biserica Sfântul Nicolae in the Vatra Sat district was built in 1905 in the Byzantine style, with three towers. Its iconostasis was donated by Gheorghe Valentin Bibescu and his wife, Martha Bibescu.

More than twenty listed or historic houses, built between 1878 and 1930, line the main road, the DN1. Together with the churches and Schitul Lespezi, they span a broad period: from a 17th-century art monument to houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the church built in 1905. The sites therefore differ not only in their architecture, but also in their respective histories.

Trails in the Prahova Valley

The route from Comarnic via Ghioșeștiul de Sus to Vârful Pleșuva runs north of the town, on the left bank of the Prahova. It is easier at first and becomes quite steep as it approaches the summit. In good visibility, the view from there extends across the entire Prahova Valley to Câmpina and farther towards Ploiești. The view therefore depends on visibility conditions.

Several mountain trails in the surrounding area can be completed on foot as out-and-back walks in a few hours. The summit route and these shorter time estimates offer different points of reference for planning: on the Pleșuva route, the steeper section to the summit is the main consideration; for the other trails, the focus is on walks lasting several hours. Trail conditions can change, so check locally before setting out.

Comarnic is also a starting point for mountain-bike routes. Numerous routes are connected with Valea Doftanei. Another option on foot is the route to Cascada Posada, located in Valea Conciului in Comarnic, at the edge of town in the direction of Sinaia. In August 2023, an unmarked walking route of about three kilometres was described for this waterfall. It starts at the DN1 on Strada Podu lui Neag, crosses the railway and follows the water. Check local access and trail conditions before visiting.

Cultural Events and Local Traditions

The Festivalul Drapelului is dedicated to the Romanian national flag, Romanian values, folklore and music. The third consecutive edition took place in 2024. If you would like to plan your trip around future editions, check the dates in advance.

A report from 2026 also describes a local tradition on Pleșuva: at the mayor’s initiative, several people climb to the summit every year to raise the Romanian flag there again. The ceremonial details may vary from year to year. In this way, cultural events complement the historic buildings with contemporary local customs, while the trails along the Prahova and in the surrounding area appeal to other interests.
