Câmpina: Museums, History and Views
Accommodation in Câmpina
Câmpina can be explored through several clearly distinct cultural themes: memorial museums preserve art and personal collections, while a historic house and archaeological finds shed light on other chapters in the city’s history. To plan your stay, you can start by choosing among these themes; views and park facilities add outdoor experiences to the picture.
Museums and Collections
The Nicolae Grigorescu Memorial Museum presents significant works by the artist in their original setting. The interiors and the house as a whole have also been reconstructed. The artworks and the design of the house therefore form a shared focus. If you are interested in art and the surroundings in which it was displayed, this connection is central to the museum.
The exhibition at the B. P. Hasdeu Memorial Museum comprises around 300 exhibits. It includes family photographs, documents and manuscripts, as well as furniture, personal belongings, old books and portraits. It also features Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu’s archive, his designs for Iulia Hasdeu Castle, and first editions of his works and those of Iulia Hasdeu. Compared with the reconstructed domestic setting at the Nicolae Grigorescu Memorial Museum, the focus here is different: personal, written and printed records form a wide-ranging collection.
The exhibition “Schițe și desene” offers another perspective on Nicolae Grigorescu. It features 202 sketches covering portraits, humorous drawings, studies of the War of Independence, village life, animals and landscapes. The subjects range from depictions of people to everyday life, animals and landscapes; the war studies add a historical dimension to the selection. Unlike the memorial museums, the focus here is on the variety of drawing subjects.
The Slobozia Parish Museum was opened in 2022 by the “Sf. Nicolae” Orthodox parish. It is housed in the basement rooms of the former metochion of Sinaia Monastery; the former metochion now serves as a parish house. The museum displays archaeological finds from a unique Bronze Age necropolis associated with the Tei, Noua and Monteoru cultures. These archaeological objects complement the artworks and personal collections with a tangible link to the Bronze Age.
Architecture and Urban History
Casa cu Grifoni was the first electrically lit building in Câmpina. After the First World War, the house was handed over to the Școala de Maiștri Sondori și Rafinori. The school had been founded in Câmpina in 1904 and was considered the first of its kind in the world. The sequence of events connects the history of the house with that of a school founded in the city: the school was established before the later handover. Casa cu Grifoni is therefore notable both for its technical aspect and for the school’s history.
Views and Time Outdoors
The 550-metre-high Muscel Hill offers a view of Câmpina and the surrounding landscape. Another point of reference for outdoor activities is Parcul Soceram, on the Muscel Plateau at the northern entrance to the city. The park offers opportunities for relaxation, sports and leisure, as well as dining options open to the public. The hill and the park offer different experiences: the hill looks out over the city and its surroundings, while the park brings together a range of leisure activities.
You can choose among several distinct themes to match your interests: art in a reconstructed domestic setting, a collection of personal and written records, drawings, or archaeological finds. If you would also like to spend time outdoors during your stay, the view from Muscel Hill and the leisure and sports facilities at Parcul Soceram offer different options.
