Săvinești: Terraces, Churches and Industrial History
Accommodation in Săvinești
Săvinești brings together a gently sloping terraced landscape, church architecture, Easter traditions and industrial history.
The Terraces and Landforms of the Municipality
The terraces of Săvinești slope gently from north to south. Between the floodplains of the Bistriţa and Cracău rivers and the terraces at 12 and 35 metres, the transition is gradual, with no significant morphological breaks. The two measurements give the terraces specific elevation references; by contrast, the north–south slope describes the direction of the terrain. Across the municipality of Săvinești as a whole, the landforms are predominantly extensive, almost level terraces. The terrain is not very dissected and is scarcely hilly. The figures refer to different scales: the north–south slope relates to the terraces of Săvinești, while the almost level and scarcely hilly landforms describe the municipal area. This gives you both a specific sense of the direction of the terrain and an overview of the municipality’s broader landscape.
Church Architecture and Local History
The Sf. Voievozi Church stands in southern Săvinești, on the second terrace of the Bistriţa River. It was consecrated on 27 September 1964. This was preceded by eleven years during which community members contributed money and materials and volunteered their labour. The Învierea Domnului Church was built in the 1820s from beams on a stone foundation. The construction combines beam building with a stone foundation: the beams form the body of the building, while the foundation provides its stone base. The two churches offer different historical perspectives: for Sf. Voievozi, the focus is on the community’s long-term contribution and its 1964 consecration; for Învierea Domnului, it is on the construction method and period.
Easter Traditions and Industrial History
Local events in Săvinești associated with the Easter celebrations include performances, markets and icon exhibitions. The Săvinești industrial platform offers another historical perspective. It was established in 1957 to produce synthetic yarns and fibres, as well as chemical products. At one point, almost 20,000 people worked at the platform, including construction workers. The number of workers adds the dimension of the labour associated with the platform to the picture of its production purpose. Compared with the churches, this shifts the focus from architectural form and religious history to production and employment. If you are planning a trip because of these Easter events, check in advance whether they fall within your visit dates.
The years refer to different events: the construction of Învierea Domnului in the 1820s, the establishment of the industrial platform in 1957 and the consecration of Sf. Voievozi in 1964. This makes it possible to distinguish the construction period, the establishment of the industrial facility and the consecration date as separate historical reference points.
