Durau: Hiking, Skiing and Monastery History
Accommodation in Durau
Durau and reasons to visit
Durău offers several different reasons to visit: hiking, seasonal skiing and sledding, and the church of Mănăstirea Durău Monastery. Durău Park amusement park is located at the foot of the Ceahlău Massif in Stațiunea Durău. If you are planning a hotel stay in Durau, these interests can help you choose when to travel and what to focus on. Would you like to explore the hiking trails and mountain panorama, plan seasonal winter sports, or learn about architecture and monastery history?
Hiking in Parcul Național Ceahlău
Durău is one of the main gateways to Parcul Național Ceahlău. Rangers provide visitors with ongoing information and advice on route selection, trail conditions, weather, destinations along the trails, and the equipment required. This advice covers more than route recommendations: it also takes into account conditions and equipment.
From Cabana Fântânele, Trail No. 4 offers a panorama of Stațiunea Durău and the Munții Bistriței. Three marked hiking trails lead from Stațiunea Durău to Cascada Duruitoarea; the waterfall can be reached in about two hours. Actual hiking time depends on the route chosen and conditions, so this should be treated as a guide rather than a firm time estimate. For planning purposes, Trail No. 4 offers a specific vantage point for views of Durău and the Munții Bistriței, while you can allow for an approximate hiking time to Cascada.
Seasonal skiing and sledding
Pârtia Durău offers beginners and advanced skiers opportunities for skiing and sledding. Its seasonal offerings also make Durau appealing to travelers who want to plan their trip around winter sports. Since the facility operates seasonally, it is advisable to check current operations for your travel dates.
Monastery church and history
The church of Mănăstirea Durău Monastery is a cruciform brick building with Moldavian architectural elements dating from the 18th century. Inside, it is decorated with encaustic paintings created by students and graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts in Iași under the guidance of N. Tonitza. Corneliu Baba was also among those involved. The building’s design and paintings represent two distinct aspects of the church: its cruciform shape and the artistic decoration of its interior.
According to tradition and the monastery’s history, the nun Marina founded the first monastic settlement in Durău in 1620. She was the daughter of a Moldavian voivode and the granddaughter of Vasile Lupu. She entered monastic life there together with two maids. The traditional account of the 1620 founding and the 18th-century architectural elements point to different periods in the monastery’s history.
