In Targu Mures, cultural history and outdoor activities offer distinct options for a stay. These include the Teleki Library, the Palace of Culture and the Citadel, as well as the Cornești Plateau with its paths, views and facilities. If you are looking for a hotel in Targu Mures, you can plan your trip around whether cultural sites or walks and outdoor activities will shape your stay. The places below offer specific points of reference.

Walks and views on the Cornești Plateau

The Cornești Plateau offers long walks along its avenues and through the surrounding forests. At a designated viewpoint, you can take in the city panorama. There is also a modern playground, a fitness park, running and cycling paths, and a renovated amphitheatre. The facilities offer different options: walking paths and woodland sit alongside opportunities for exercise and play.

At Târgu-Mureș Zoo, a viewing tower offers elevated views of the forest and animals. This viewpoint differs from the one on the Cornești Plateau, where the city panorama is the main attraction. When planning, you can decide whether you would prefer an elevated view of animals and forest or a view across the city.

The plateau can be reached on foot, by bicycle, by car or by bus. The bus runs in summer; if you plan to take it, check the timetable in advance.

The Citadel and regional history

The medieval Citadel was built in the 17th century on the site of an older fortification dating from 1492. Its pentagonal layout and seven bastions are defining architectural features; the Citadel has been fully renovated. The Archaeological and History Museum is located within the Citadel. It presents the history of the region, its cultural heritage and the area's archaeological heritage. Here, the history of the fortification meets regional and archaeological themes.

Art, the library and memorial exhibits

The Palace of Culture offers a different focus, with its interiors, art galleries and memorial exhibitions. Visitors can explore the foyer, staircases, Hall of Mirrors, Small Hall and Grand Hall. There is also a gallery of Hungarian classical art, a gallery of modern Romanian art, and memorial exhibitions dedicated to mayors Dr György Bernády and Dr Emil Dandea. Architecture, art and civic remembrance come together here.

The Teleki Library is an encyclopaedic and scholarly book collection founded by Sámuel Teleki and open to everyone. Count Sámuel Teleki opened the first public library in Transylvania in 1802. The collection includes incunabula, famous Bibles and hand-painted atlases from the 17th century. Those interested in book collections will find a different focus here than in the art galleries of the Palace of Culture.

The Bolyai Museum was founded in 1937 and displays surviving personal belongings of the two mathematicians. The memorial room is now located on the ground floor of the Teleki Library building.
