Discover Reghin: Museums, Churches and Violin Making
Accommodation in Reghin
When looking for a hotel in Reghin, it helps to first identify the themes you want to shape your stay. Reghin brings together culture, nature and activity—from museums and churches to violin making, an oak forest nature reserve and two cycling routes. This lets you think about Reghin in terms of culture, nature or activity and weigh up the focus of your trip.
Culture, Museums and Violin Making
Reghin has two musical instrument factories and numerous violin-making workshops. The “Piramida Viorilor” also celebrates this craft: the monument, created by Barothy Adam, is dedicated to violin makers, stands 7.30 metres tall and is located in front of the Evangelical Church. The combination of craftsmanship and a public monument gives the subject its own cultural dimension.
The “Anton Badea” Ethnographic Museum presents representative cultural heritage through its permanent exhibition “Viața satului mureşean” in seven halls. Its open-air section offers a model of a Mureș village, complete with houses and outbuildings. The facilities there include a water mill from Vătava, an oil mill from Hodac and a wine press from Batoș. There is also a wooden church from Iara, reconstructed at the museum in 1998. The exhibition thus combines collection pieces with recreated elements of village life.
The permanent Saxon Museum is dedicated to the life of the Transylvanian Saxons in Reghin and the surrounding area. Traditional costumes, embroidery, household objects, books and religious items form the basis of this portrayal. Those interested in different cultural perspectives can therefore find, alongside Mureș village culture, an insight into the life of the Transylvanian Saxons.
Churches and Architectural Styles
The wooden church known as “Bisericuța lui Petru Maior” is the only Romanian historic monument of national importance in the municipality of Reghin and is listed as a historic monument. Its cruciform plan with three apses reflects Moldavian influences. One distinctive feature is the iconostasis, made in 1760: its Royal Doors display six painted medallions set within a pierced decorative panel featuring grapevines and bunches of grapes.
The Reformed Church is located at 51 Strada Mihai Viteazu. It was built in 1890 to designs by the architect Alpár Ignác. Its valuable furnishings include the pulpit, canopy, altar furnishings and pews; the coffered ceiling depicts churches from Transylvania. The church hosts an annual choral music festival. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the event dates in advance.
The Roman Catholic Church is in the Late Baroque style. It was built during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa and completed in 1781. Its twelve stained-glass windows depict notable Hungarian figures, kings and saints. The churches mentioned here therefore differ both in their architectural styles and their furnishings and subject matter.
Nature and Cycling Routes
Pădurea Rotundă, an oak forest designated as a nature reserve, lies near Reghin and is used for recreation, sport and tourism. Colonies of European bee-eaters have also been recorded in the Reghin area; the species is protected at the European level. These natural attractions complement the cultural focus with woodland and wildlife.
Two named routes are described for cycling. The yellow-marked Velopoteca Apusului is 5.4 kilometres long and runs from Strada Spitalului to Strada Mihai Viteazu. The red Velopoteca Poienii is four kilometres long, runs from Strada Vânătorilor to Strada Dedradului and passes through Pădurea Hedel forest. The routes can be distinguished by their length, marker colour and stated endpoints; the forest section is also specified for Poienii. Route conditions can change, so it is worth checking the latest situation before setting off.
