Roman heritage in Călugăreni

A major focus of local history is the Roman archaeological site at Călugăreni. It is part of the extensive defensive system of the Roman Empire, known as the Limes. One of the most significant surviving monuments at the site is a stone fort. The Roman road Drumul lui Traian is also part of this historical context: it ran from Nirajul Mare to the fort at Călugăreni; its paved roadway was approximately five metres wide. Drumul lui Traian led to the fort at Călugăreni along a paved roadway approximately five metres wide.

The Călugăreni Archaeological Park was established in 2015. Its TIME BOX exhibition pavilions present aspects of Roman civilian and military life and provide information about the excavations there. The park’s visitor attractions include the Busola viewpoint. Check the current opening hours of the exhibition pavilions before visiting.

Monastic history and religious art

The Franciscan monastery and Franciscan church in Călugăreni are among the important religious monuments in the Niraj Valley. The monastery’s present building dates to around 1634. A secondary school operated there from 1669 for more than a century. The monastery’s history thus encompasses both religious architecture and a long period of education.

The Roman Catholic church in Eremitu also has a historical detail with its own date: its cross was erected between 1808 and 1812. It may have been made in the 14th century, but this earlier date is uncertain. The cross was erected between 1808 and 1812; its possible 14th-century origin has not been confirmed.

Other historical traces

Different historical interpretations converge at Cetatea lui Vityál. According to archaeologists, the medieval fortification was built on the foundations of a Bronze Age fortification. Traces and ruins can still be found in the surrounding forests, possibly connected with the nearby fortifications and Cetatea lui Vityál. This cautious interpretation is part of the site’s history.
