Burgfeld: Hiking, History and Trout-Farming Tradition
Accommodation in Burgfeld
Burgfeld – Câmpu Cetăţii – offers several concrete starting points for planning a trip: hiking destinations in the surrounding forests, archaeological sites with different historical connections, models of the Niraj Valley and a strong trout-farming tradition. These themes offer different focal points. When planning your stay, you can decide whether trails, cultural history, regional landscapes or seasonal experiences will shape your itinerary.
Hiking and Landscapes
From Câmpu Cetăţii, hikes through the surrounding forests can lead, for example, to Lacul cu Arini, Vityál Fortress or Piatra Likaskő. The homologated mountain trails also include the Câmpu Cetăţii – Dealul Vardomb – Câmpu Cetăţii route. The hiking options therefore include both individual named destinations and a specifically designated route, without providing information about trail length or walking time.
The Terra Siculorum section of Via Transilvanica begins in Câmpu Cetăţii and crosses the Sovata–Praid Depression. The landscape along this larger section includes gentle hills, flowering meadows, dense forests and pastureland. This broader context complements the specific hiking destinations with a view of the wider area traversed by the route.
Archaeology Between the La Tène Period and the Roman Limes
The “Aşezarea Latene de la Câmpu Cetăţii - Cetate” is situated on a northern hilltop at the confluence of the Nirajul Mare and Nirajul Mic rivers. The Geto-Dacian settlement dates from the La Tène period, from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. Its enclosing wall forms an oval ring about 15 metres below the summit. The site may have had two settlement phases: a Dacian one and an early medieval one.
A different historical connection is the “Turnul de epocă romană de la Câmpu Cetăţii - Cetatea Săcădat”. The fortification lies south of Câmpu Cetăţii, in the forest on the summit of Dealul Săcădat, between the Niraj Valley and the Săcădat Valley. It was part of the eastern line of the Roman limes in Dacia and dates from the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD. Its ground plan is roughly rectangular. The 27.5 × 26.5-metre earthen rampart has one rounded corner; V-shaped defensive ditches were also part of the site. Together, the two sites represent different historical connections: a La Tène-period settlement and a Roman fortification.
Models of the Niraj Valley
The Mini Niraj Visitor Centre displays a model of the entire Niraj Valley. As of 23 April 2026, the Mini-Nyárád model complex comprises a total of 81 buildings; its model railway has seven trains. The models offer another way to explore the region: the valley is presented as a continuous landscape, while the model complex depicts buildings and railway details.
Seasonal Train Ride, Event and Trout-Farming Tradition
The railway section between Sovata and Câmpu Cetăţii was restored in 2011 and is used for tourism. During the summer season, tourists can travel 14 kilometres to Câmpu Cetăţii on the Mocănița. If you would like to include a ride in your plans, check the current timetable.
Câmpu Cetăţii hosts the Parada Baloanelor cu Aer Cald, an internationally recognised hot-air balloon event. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates in advance. The trout-farming tradition also shapes the area: the trout farm in Câmpu Cetăţii was established around the 1930s, and Câmpu Cetăţii has long been known for its fresh trout dishes. Local food culture and seasonal experiences thus complement the themes of hiking and history.
