Thermal Waters and Bathing Facilities in Vața Băi

The Complex Balneo Termal Vața Băi is located in the Zarand Basin, on the Crișul Alb River. The thermal waters of Vața Băi are rich in calcium, sulfur, sodium, and magnesium. This highlights both the thermal spa’s geographical setting and the mineral composition of its water.

Vața Thermal Spa has indoor pools with thermal water, saunas, and a salt room. Ștrand Vața Băi has three additional thermal-water pools and a saltwater pool with hydromassage. The health center at the Vața thermal baths offers relaxation treatments, as well as medical physiotherapy and kinesiotherapy. Thermal baths are available there both in bathtubs and in pools. The restaurants at Complex Vața Băi serve traditional dishes. Complex Vața Băi also includes a dendrological park that is over 100 years old. Pool, treatment, and restaurant offerings may change; check which services are currently available before your visit.

Wooden Churches and Archaeological Traces

The commune of Vața de Jos is home to the wooden church of Ciungani. Built around 1600, it has a 14-meter-high tower, the tallest among the wooden churches in Hunedoara County. The commune is also home to the wooden church of Birtin. It dates from 1690 and is listed as a historic monument. The two churches offer different historical points of interest: in Ciungani, the exceptional tower height; in Birtin, the construction date and its historic-monument listing.

Near Vața de Jos is Peștera Prihodiște, also known as Peștera Hânzasca. The cave is an archaeological site classified as a cave settlement. Cave settlements dating from the Eneolithic and the Early and Middle Bronze Age are recorded at Peștera Prihodiște. The structure has two entrances that join in a central chamber to form a partially active passage. This adds an archaeological perspective to the history of the wooden churches.

The Zestrea Apusenilor collection offers another way to explore local history, culture, art, and tradition. The public can interact with objects and materials from the collection and learn more about these subjects. The churches, archaeological site, and collection thus differ in their respective focus: architectural history, archaeological traces, and direct engagement with collection objects.

Historical Names and Regional Orientation

Vața de Jos is historically documented under the name Wattya from 1439. At the beginning of the 20th century, King Carol al II-lea traveled from Săvârșin Castle to the thermal baths of Vața. The road used for the journey is now called “Drumul Regelui.” Route 30MN17 uses only the road known as “Drumul Regelui,” DJ707, between Petriș and Vața de Jos, passing through Petriș, Corbești, Roșia Nouă, and Obârșia. This makes it possible to distinguish between a historical journey and a specifically named route as two separate points of reference for the road’s name.
