Gurasada brings together historical traces, landscapes and activities in various places within the municipality. When planning your stay, it is worth keeping the locations in mind: attractions in the village of Gurasada sit alongside destinations in Câmpuri-Surduc, Boiu de Sus and Gothatea. This can help you decide whether you are most interested in culture, nature or active experiences.

History and Architecture in Gurasada

Gurasada was first mentioned in a document in 1292 under the name ZAD. A Paleolithic settlement is also part of the area’s history. A much later period is represented by the La Tène fortification near Câmpuri-Surduc: it was a Geto-Dacian structure that existed from the 1st century BC to the 2nd century AD. Its wall was made of unworked stones bonded with earth, while the upper part was made of wood.

The fortification is located on the Cetăţuia promontory, north of the village of Câmpuri-Surduc and within the administrative area of Gurasada. For those interested in culture, its location and construction offer two specific points of interest: its prominent position north of the village and its combination of stone, earth and wood. This sets the structure apart from the later church and manor-house heritage in the village of Gurasada.

There, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel is a historic monument dating from the 13th century. Its naive interior paintings are associated with work begun in 1765 by Ioan from Deva and Nicolae from Pitești. The Klobosisky Manor House also stands in the village, with an accompanying park of approximately 2.50 hectares. The church and manor-house park offer different ways to explore local history: one is a religious building with later paintings, while the other is an estate whose park forms a landscape area in its own right.

Karst, River and Nature in the Municipality

In Boiu de Sus, another village within the administrative area of Gurasada, a karst landscape stretches from Cărmăzănești to Glodghilești. There, a cave system includes 27 recorded natural cavities: 24 caves and three shafts. This breakdown makes clear that the total includes different types of formations, not just caves. Boiu de Sus is also home to a nature reserve for horned vipers, considered unique in Europe.

The waterways also shape the region’s geography: the Gurasada Stream is a tributary of the Mureș. It flows into the Mureș upstream of Gurasada, between Gurasada and Gothatea. The stream should therefore not be confused with the main river; it is a separate tributary with a confluence described as being between the two villages.

Activities and Recurring Events

Gurasada Park is an adventure and climbing park in the Mureș Valley, on the E 68 in the village of Gothatea, in Gurasada commune. Children and adults can try two tree-climbing courses with different levels of difficulty. So when choosing an active outing, you can consider the two courses and their respective difficulty levels as a specific point of difference.

Two events in the calendar take place on the last Sunday in July: the traditional Ruga is held every year on this day, and the annual Commune Day is also scheduled for then. Commune Day is a cultural and sporting event in the natural park of the village of Gurasada. In winter, Christmas carols and performances take center stage at the Winter Customs Festival, which involves children from Gurasada and the other villages. The July date and the winter festival thus offer different seasonal occasions, though the two events do not have the same program.
