The “Drumul lui Neag” cycling route runs between Uricani and Câmpușel through Câmpu Lui Neag. It is rated as moderate, has an elevation gain of 474 metres and is described as taking six hours. Check the conditions before setting out.
The marked hiking trail to Lunca Berhina starts in Câmpu Lui Neag, passes through the Little Retezat and connects the western Jiul Valley with the Lăpușnicu-Mare Valley. It is rated as moderate and is described as taking eight hours. The trail is marked with a red triangle on a white background; check the markings on site before setting out. Both routes are described as moderate; the two-hour difference between the six-hour cycling route and the eight-hour hike helps you compare the time required for these two activities.
Another hiking route in the Retezat crosses the access road from Câmpu Lui Neag to Cabana Buta. In the wider region, access to Retezat National Park at Buta follows the DN 66A and then an unpaved road; Câmpușel can be reached via the DN 66A. The Buta information point is located in Câmpu Lui Neag in the western Jiul Valley.
Landscape and protected nature
The lake near Câmpu Lui Neag was created on the site of a former open-cast coal mine. Its location connects the present-day landscape of the area with the site's former use for coal mining. Nearby, on the Jiul de Vest River, lies Peștera Zeicului. It has been designated a nature reserve and natural monument since 2000.
Tourist activities inside the cave are not permitted: it is not equipped for cave tourism and has no officially approved visitor regulations. This is an important point to consider when planning an excursion that includes Peștera Zeicului.
Churches, wooden houses and Christmas traditions
At kilometre 9 of the “Drumul lui Neag” cycling route is the Old Rite Church by the lake in Câmpu Lui Neag. At kilometre 11 is the Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel in Câmpu Lui Neag, also a tourist attraction along the cycling route. These kilometre markers provide two specific cultural points of interest along the route.
Several old traditional wooden houses can be seen in Câmpu Lui Neag. Along with the churches and lake, they offer another connection to local culture; individual buildings may change.
The Craii Nativity carol is part of Câmpu Lui Neag’s Christmas tradition. In a performance described in December 2024 at the church, the birth of Christ was artistically portrayed and accompanied by Christmas carols. This Christmas custom adds a seasonal cultural perspective to the themes of routes and nature.
