Sălaşu de Sus brings together nature and cultural experiences spread across different locations and routes. When planning your trip, it is therefore important to decide which trailheads and sights you want to focus on: the route to Gura Cetății Cave starts in the village, while two themed trails begin near the Retezat National Park Visitor Centre in Nucșoara.

Hiking Trails and Destinations in the Retezat Area

The “Natura lângă noi” themed trail starts near the Visitor Centre in Nucșoara and leads to a viewpoint. From there, much of the Hațeg Depression is visible. The trail therefore combines a clearly marked starting point with a destination whose views over the depression make it a distinct focus for your planning.

The “People and Forest” themed trail leads from the Visitor Centre in Nucșoara to Mălăiești Fortress. Those interested in this trail will also find an opportunity to learn about the fortress’s history at the destination. By contrast, the route to Gura Cetății Cave starts at the Tourist Information Centre in Sălaşu de Sus: it passes through Paroș and continues to Peștera; from there, the cave is about two kilometres farther on.

The route to Cabana Gențiana on the northern side of the Retezat Massif is also described as a specific sequence of places: Ohaba de sub Piatră – Sălaşu de Sus – Cârnic – Pietrele. For cycling plans, another figure is useful: four of the twelve cycling routes managed by the Asociația de Ecoturism Țara Hațegului-Retezat pass through the commune of Sălaşu de Sus. This gives cyclists an indication of the local share of the route network, without implying that the different routes are the same.

A waterfall lies in Retezat National Park in the Nucșoara Valley at an altitude of 1,050 metres, on the way to the Pietrele refuge or the lakes in the Retezat. It adds a mountain nature destination to the themed trails and routes.

Daffodil Meadows and the Annual Festival

The daffodil meadows lie between Sălaşu de Sus and Nucșoara. This protected botanical nature area covers approximately 20 hectares, where wild daffodils have spread naturally. The area is classified as IUCN Category IV and is part of the Țara Hațegului UNESCO Global Geopark. Here, a specific area of landscape is combined with a designated protected-area and geopark status.

The Daffodil Festival takes place in the daffodil meadows near Nucșoara every year around the Feast of Saints Constantine and Helena. It lasts two days and includes several cultural and sporting events. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year before finalising your stay.

Fortresses and Traditional Technology

The fortified Cândreș noble residence in Sălaşu de Sus dates from the 15th to the 17th century. It includes a princely or noble court and a court chapel with a bell tower, which is in ruins. The rectangular enclosure measures approximately 95 × 55 metres. These dimensions give an idea of the complex, while the court and chapel identify its central structures.

Mălăiești Fortress was built by the Cândreș noble family of Sălaș around 1380. A stone ring wall surrounds the keep; four polygonal towers were added later. The fortress has been restored since 2012. Together with its role as the destination of the “People and Forest” themed trail, it offers a distinct historical point of interest for a stay that combines cultural experiences with route planning.

The village of Peștera is also home to a traditional technology complex with a watermill, a fulling mill and a lime kiln. These three elements make the complex a further cultural heritage attraction in the commune, distinct from its fortifications.

Local Products and Tastings

Virșli de Sălaș is described as a traditional product specific to the commune of Sălaşu de Sus and is certified as a traditional product by Romania’s Ministry of Agriculture. Opportunities to see and taste local products are available at events and in residents’ homes. If regional cuisine is part of your trip, you can include these opportunities in your plans alongside the nature and cultural experiences.

When choosing a hotel, it helps to first identify your planned trailheads and destinations. The cave route starts in Sălaşu de Sus; the starting points for the themed trails mentioned here are near the Visitor Centre in Nucșoara.
