As a destination, Săcelu brings together a spa, mineral-water pools, springs, wooded hills and archaeological traces from Roman times. When looking for hotels in Săcelu, you can first consider the focus of your trip: would you like to center it around the spa, are you particularly interested in the landscape, or would you like to learn about the town’s history? The following topics offer practical guidance.

Hilly Landscape and Springs

The Săcelu spa is bordered to the east by Dealul Ciocadia (579 m) and to the west by Dealul Săcelu (570 m). The hills around the spa are characterized by deciduous forests of beech, oak and lime trees, as well as pastureland. The pools are also part of the town’s distinctive character: their water changes color depending on the season.

Two named springs offer further points of reference in the landscape. Izvorul de Ochi, also known as Sadoveanu, lies in a side channel of the Blahnița River. Izvorul Săcelata, also known as Sfânta Treime, is located on the left-hand slope of the Blahnița, southeast of the Săcelu spa. Their names and distinct locations make it easier to tell the springs apart.

Bathing and Spa Facilities

Băile Săcelu has four outdoor pools with cold mineral water, as well as a pool for aeroheliotherapy. Izvorul Căciulata is used for indoor spa treatments. The treatment facilities include mineral-water baths, mud and paraffin packs, electrotherapy and galvanic baths. There are also underwater and Scottish showers, aerosol treatments, massages and rooms for therapeutic exercise.

The bathing facilities and listed treatments are distinct from the town’s natural and historical attractions. If you are planning a visit focused on the spa, check the current operating conditions before you travel.

Roman Traces and Local History

The Săcelu spa has been documented since 1480. The Roman past is also evident at specific archaeological sites: La Buha is one of the known Roman-era archaeological sites in Săcelu. The Roman fort is considered a military and cultural center.

Investigations of the fort documented Roman coins, remains of baths, carved stones, three stone statues, columns without capitals and a thermal complex. The finds also include inscriptions relating to the use of the mineral springs. The spa’s history therefore encompasses both its long documentary record and tangible evidence of Roman times.

Getting There and Regional Orientation

Săcelu is located on county road DJ661. The easiest way to reach the town by car is via European route E70 to Târgu Jiu, then along the county road toward Crasna and Săcelu. This route description does not specify a travel time; actual traffic conditions and your chosen travel date remain important for planning.

A regional tourist route runs from Târgu Jiu via Curtișoara (Bălănești), Mușetești and Crasna (Săcelu), continuing to Novaci and Baia de Fier and then to Polovragi. It places Săcelu within a longer route.
