Gorj: Brâncuși Art, Caves and Mountain Landscapes
Accommodation in Gorj
The Brâncuși Monumental Ensemble in Târgu Jiu brings together abstract sculpture, landscape architecture, engineering and urban planning. It was created in 1937–1938 to commemorate those who lost their lives defending the city in the First World War. Two parks are connected by the Avenue of Heroes; the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul stands on the axis. Art, spatial design and historical commemoration form a single ensemble here.
Art, Museums and Monasteries
At the Museum of Folk Architecture in Curtișoara, you can explore more than 30 old wooden houses and farmsteads assembled to form an open-air village museum. The museum also includes the Tătărescu ensemble, the Church of Saint John the Baptist dating from 1821, and historic water-powered facilities. The combination of homes, farmsteads and other buildings makes the museum a distinctive window into the region’s folk architecture.
Other historical highlights can be found at several monasteries and museums. The Casa Muzeu “Constantin Brâncuși” in Hobița is a monument of folk architecture from the second half of the 19th century. Tismana Monastery was founded by Saint Nicodemus with the support of Voivode Radu I (1377–1383). Lainici Monastery has a collection of religious objects and old books. Polovragi Monastery lies near Cheile Oltețului and Peștera Polovragi; it administered the cave for 300 years. These places offer different highlights, from architecture and collections to a long monastic history.
Karst Landscapes and Protected Nature
Cheile Sohodolului is an approximately 12-kilometre-long karst landscape in the Vâlcan Mountains between Runcu and Poiana Contului. It can be reached via National Road 67D and traversed by car, bicycle or on foot. Road conditions may change; check them before setting out. The Sohodol Valley is also a protected botanical area, home to plant species that are rare in Romania’s flora.
Cheile Oltețului lies in the northeast of Gorj County, within the administrative territory of the commune of Polovragi, and is part of a nationally protected natural area. In Peștera Polovragi, cavers have mapped about ten kilometres of passages; 800 metres of the gallery are open to visitors. This part of Gorj thus offers both the landscape above ground and the underground world of karst.
Defileul Jiului National Park is a protected mountain landscape of rocks, limestone cliffs, peaks, gorges, waterfalls, alpine meadows and forests. Hiking trails pass through some of its 22 habitats of national and European interest. Themed routes offer views of forests, clearings, sunny pastures, and steeper and gentler mountain ridges. At the national park’s visitor centre in Bumbești Jiu, you can find information about tourism, the biodiversity of managed protected areas and the region’s history.
Activities and Trip Planning
Rafting is possible on designated stretches of the Jiu River in Defileul Jiului National Park; use may be subject to park rules and restrictions. Cycling is currently possible on the Plaiului Bumbești access route, which is recognised by the local community. Those interested in exploring the landscape on the move can choose from different options, each tied to specific stretches or routes.
The Transalpina (DN 67C) also helps shape the way around Gorj: it is Romania’s highest road, connecting Novaci in Gorj with Sebeș in Alba and crossing the Parâng Mountains. Seasonal road closures may apply; take them into account when planning a drive. The mountain resort of Rânca lies at an altitude of 1,600 metres and can be reached from Novaci via the Transalpina. It has five ski runs, one of which is equipped for night skiing. As the ski-run facilities may change, check the current situation before a winter visit.
When planning a hotel stay, you can start by deciding what you want your trip to focus on: Brâncuși’s ensemble and museums, monasteries and architecture, karst and caves, or mountains and outdoor activities. This makes it easier to begin your search for a place to stay in Gorj based on the experiences that matter most to you.
