Țicleni: Churches, Archaeology and the Hilly Landscape of Gorj
Accommodation in Țicleni
Țicleni combines its location in the Cioiana stream valley with a rich cultural history. If you are looking for a hotel in Țicleni, its churches, archaeological sites and surrounding landscape offer different points of reference for planning your trip. The area’s history ranges from a Geto-Dacian fortification to churches with recorded construction and consecration dates.
To the north, the town is surrounded by the sub-Carpathian hills between the Jiu and Gilort rivers, known as the Dealurile lui Bran; to the south lie the hills of the Getic Plateau. Part of Țicleni’s administrative area also falls within the Coridorul Jiului Natura 2000 protected area (ROSCI0045), a European site of community importance. The valley, northern hills and southern uplands thus shape the landscape around the town.
Churches and Building History
One architectural landmark is Casa Ţicleni, a two-storey house from the town inspired by the architecture of the old cule houses of Gorj. Its ground floor is partly fortified. The two storeys and the fortified ground floor give the building a distinctive form that sets it apart from the town’s religious buildings.
In Tunși, a locality within Țicleni, the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God has retained its ship-like form; it also has a bell tower clad in wood. Its earliest documented date is 1601. The dates associated with the older Church of St George, next to the parish church in Țicleni, refer to different events: it was founded around 1800 and rebuilt from the ground up in 1889. The early date of the church in Tunși and the foundation and rebuilding history of St George can therefore be understood as distinct historical points of reference.
On the Dealului Bujorului plateau stands a church dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, Saint Great Martyr Demetrius, the Myrrh-Streamer, and Saint Venerable Parascheva. It was built between 1897 and 1899 and consecrated on 26 October 1899. The plateau lies at an altitude of 300 metres. The details of its construction, consecration and elevation connect the site’s religious history with its location.
Archaeology and Historical Traces
La Cetate is a Geto-Dacian fortification dating from the La Tène period. The archaeological site Fortificaţia Latene de la Ţicleni – La Cetate is located two kilometres southwest of Țicleni and two kilometres southwest of the Cioiana stream. These location details place the site in relation both to the town and to the stream valley.
Another archaeological trace leads to Dealul Bujorului in the Tunși district, where a Roman Republican coin hoard was discovered in 1969. It comprised 240 Republican Roman silver denarii dating from 211 to 73 BC. Together with the fortification at La Cetate, this find offers a glimpse into the different archaeological contexts in and around Țicleni.
Local Life and Regional Orientation
Saline and thermal springs have been used for therapeutic treatments since 29 July 1973. This historical aspect sits alongside the town’s architectural and archaeological traces. The La Poalele Cetății festival is also part of its more recent cultural history: its seventh edition took place in 2025 and was dedicated to tradition, children and community.
For regional orientation, a tourist route designated by Gorj County is also worth noting. It runs from Târgu Jiu via Scoarţa, Târgu Cărbuneşti (Țicleni), Jupâneşti, Bărbăteşti, Săuleşti, Vladimir, Aninoasa and Turburea to Ţânţăreni or Craiova. This also makes it possible to view Țicleni as part of a longer regional route. The different points of interest in the area—landscape, churches, building history and archaeology—can help you decide what to focus on during your trip to Țicleni.
