Cheile Turzii, hiking trails and archaeological sites give Petreștii De Jos a range of different attractions. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can first consider whether the landscape, a shorter hike or a longer route should shape your itinerary.

Cheile Turzii: Protected Area and Limestone Landscape

Cheile Turzii is a nature reserve of national interest and also an IUCN Category IV habitat/species management area. Administratively, the area belongs to the municipality of Petreștii De Jos. The gorge was formed by the erosion of Jurassic limestone by the Hășdate River. Its protected status and formation describe two aspects of this natural area: its classification and its geological formation.

About 50 to 60 caves, rock arches or niches are known in Cheile Turzii. The approximate number therefore includes different types of formations and does not refer to caves alone. If you want to understand the gorge geologically, you can distinguish between its formation through erosion and its various rock formations.

Hiking: Compare Routes by Time and Character

The lower gorge trail runs from Cabana Cheile Turzii to the edge of Petreștii De Jos. It is easy, about 3.25 kilometres long and takes approximately one hour. Most of the trail is developed, has only minor elevation changes and includes four bridges over the Hășdate Valley. Its length, duration, elevation profile and bridges give you several concrete points of reference for assessing this hike.

The trail marked with a yellow stripe runs from Turda via Drumul Domnilor and Cheile Turzii to Petreștii De Jos. It is 11 kilometres long, takes 3:30 to 4:30 hours and is rated easy. Compared with the lower gorge trail, it is the longer hiking option. The two trails therefore differ above all in the time required: approximately one hour versus 3:30 to 4:30 hours.

The Circuitul Cheilor Turzii loop trail is another option. It starts and ends at Cabana Cheile Turzii and offers views from above, from the edges of the limestone walls. While the two trails described can be easily compared by length and duration, the loop trail offers a different point of reference for planning: the view from the limestone walls.

Archaeological Sites and Their Focus

The archaeological sites also differ in location and content. Crucea Cheii lies on the right bank of the Hășdate Valley between the municipality of Petreștii De Jos and Cheile Turzii. At Dealul Alb, an archaeological site is listed in the Register of Historic Monuments of Cluj County. The Petreştii de Jos – Dealul lui Horna site comprises a settlement and a burial mound necropolis dating from the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt period. The valley location, the listing in the register and the dating of the two archaeological components thus represent distinct historical focal points.
