When planning your trip, Negreni offers several themes to consider: nature and hiking, historic sites, and markets and customs. You can decide whether the landscape, specific hiking opportunities or a cultural theme should be the focus of your stay.

Nature and hiking

The municipality of Negreni lies on the right bank of the Crișul Repede, between the Vlădeasa Mountains south of the Crișul Repede Valley and the Plopiș and Meseș Mountains north of the same valley. Both its location by the river and the mountain ranges on either side of the valley are therefore important to understanding the landscape.

The Defileul Crișului Repede gorge is of botanical, zoological and geological significance. Its plant life, wildlife and geology are three distinct aspects of its natural environment. There are also hiking opportunities at Dealul Paltiniș and near Măgura-Piatra Craiului. This offers two distinct focal points: the gorge’s natural significance and the specifically named hiking destinations.

History and remembrance

The Church of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel in Negreni was built between 1846 and 1856. It has a clock donated by Metropolitan Andrei Șaguna. The construction dates and the donation offer different historical details: the dates refer to the church’s construction, while the clock’s history includes the name of its donor.

Cetatea Prilogului is also among the area’s archaeological and historical sites. Finds from the Bronze Age have been discovered there. In Bucea, the Vulturul Brâncovenesc monument commemorates those who fell in both world wars, as well as people who died in Romania’s communist prisons. The historical connections therefore range from archaeological finds to remembrance of war victims and people who died in communist detention.

Markets, events and customs

The annual autumn market in Negreni, also known as Târgul de la Fechetău, is a multi-day event. It offers antiques, works of art, furniture, clothing, shoes and household goods; fruit and vegetables are sold directly by producers. The market brings together a range of different goods and offers a distinct reason to include Negreni in your autumn travel plans.

The Târgul de vară de la Negreni runs from Friday to Sunday in the second week of June. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the specific dates. The Târgul Coaselor has a different seasonal connection: it marks the start of the mowing season. The three events therefore have clearly distinct timings—a multi-day annual autumn market, a June date range for the Târgul de vară and the start of the mowing season for the Târgul Coaselor.

The municipality’s customs include Colindatul, a Christmas tradition that is still practised there. Children aged 9 to 16 walk around with the star, while young men aged 17 to 22 perform the Corinda. Their age groups and roles are clearly distinguished: the custom involves both walking around with the star and performing the Corinda.

Getting there and planning your trip

Rail access to Negreni is via Negreni stop. The municipality’s main transport connections also include national road DN 1/E60 and the railway line between Oradea, Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest and Constanța. Check the current timetable before travelling for specific journey times. When planning your stay, you can then decide whether hiking destinations, historical themes or an event date best match your travel interests.
