Dealu Negru: Cycling Routes, Mountain Forests and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Dealu Negru
Dealu Negru combines mountainous forest terrain with named cycling routes and historical cultural associations. Located between Călățele and Beliș, the village offers a clear geographical setting for a trip focused on cycling, landscape and history.
Geographical Setting and Forest Landscape
Dealu Negru lies at the boundary between the Huedin-Călățele Depression, locally known as Țara Călatei, and the Apuseni Mountains. The terrain is mountainous; the forests are home to spruce, fir, pine and birch trees. The depression and the mountains are the two geographical reference points, while the tree species named further describe the forested landscape.
Cycling Routes with Different Profiles
The Vasvári cycling route runs from Lake Beliș-Fântânele through Beliș and Dealu Negru to Călățele. It is described as moderately difficult and considered suitable for people who cycle regularly. This tells you both which places the route passes through and what level of cycling experience its rating indicates.
The Bánffy cycling route follows the Râșca–Dealu Negru road and reaches the Huedin–Beliș national road after about 2 km. The two routes can be compared using different details: the Vasvári route specifies the sequence of places and its difficulty, while the Bánffy route specifies the road it follows and an approximate distance. You can therefore weigh up which route suits you based on whether the stated difficulty or the specific road connection matters more to your plans.
Church History
The Orthodox wooden church “Sf. Voievozi” is listed as a historic monument; its address is given as number 4 in Dealu Negru and its year of construction as 1764. In 1935, it was moved from Finciu, also in Călățele commune, to Dealu Negru. On 26 June 2012, the church burned down completely. The Dealu-Negru branch church is dedicated to Saint Hierarch Spyridon.
Cultural Gatherings and Traditional Cuisine
A traditional Șezătoare was held in the cultural hall in Dealu Negru, organized by the “Tudor Jarda” Popular School of Arts in Cluj-Napoca. At the same time, an exam was held for a weaving and sewing course with 69 female participants. The course was coordinated by folk art master Elvira Gavriș. An account of the gathering also mentions the multicoloured traditional costumes worn by residents and visitors from different parts of Romania.
A 2018 report describes a mushroom and forest-fruit festival in Dealu Negru, the first of its kind to be held in Cluj County. At the festival, residents prepared a mushroom stew with garlic and Groșcior according to a recipe described as a hundred years old.
A feature published on 10 September 2011 described a potato festival in the Râșca–Dealu Negru area that attracted thousands of participants every autumn. This information refers to the Râșca–Dealu Negru area, not exclusively to Dealu Negru. Together with the Șezătoare and the mushroom and forest-fruit festival, it provides further historical context for the region’s festival culture.
