Gherla’s history can be explored through several distinct themes: Armenian Catholic buildings, a Jewish place of worship, Roman finds and museum collections. If you are looking for a hotel in Gherla, these highlights can help you tailor your stay to your cultural interests.

Churches and Architectural History

The “Solomon” Church is the oldest Armenian Catholic place of worship in Transylvania and was the first stone church built in Gherla. Its Late Gothic entrance portal comes from the Reformed Church in Unguraș, Cluj County. The Armenian Catholic Cathedral “Sfânta Treime” was built between 1748 and 1800 and houses the oil painting “Coborârea de pe Cruce.” The chapel of Saint Mary of Loreto in the Franciscan monastery was consecrated in 1760. These dates refer to different events: the cathedral’s construction period and the chapel’s consecration.

Gherla’s synagogue was built in 1903 with elaborate architecture for the city’s growing Jewish population. Beyond its individual religious buildings, Gherla’s distinctive urban design is included in the “Via Habsburg” European Cultural Route. This means that the city’s historical highlights encompass both specific buildings and a distinctive feature of its urban design.

Museums and Historical Collections

The Gherla History Museum displays cultural artifacts to the public. It is housed in the Baroque Karaciany House, built in the early 18th century and listed as a protected historic building in the city. The exhibits include military diplomas from the Roman camp at Gherla dating to the 2nd century, including one from the year 123. The century designation describes the broader period covered by the diplomas; 123 is the specific year of one item. The house’s architectural history and the period of the Roman artifacts are therefore far apart.

Past temporary exhibitions have covered weapons and military equipment, science and technology, glass icons from the Nicula school, art and tradition along the Someșul Mic, the Cucuteni culture, and Armenian art and culture. The topics therefore extend beyond Roman finds to include regional art and tradition. The History Museum’s library contains specialist publications on prehistory and ancient, medieval, early modern and contemporary history. The restored Casa Lászlóffy currently houses the Centrul Muzeal de Istorie community museum.
