Beliş: Lakes, Mountains and Local History
Accommodation in Beliş
When choosing a destination, three distinct perspectives can help you decide on Beliş: the commune’s mountain scenery, the lake and its tourist area, and buildings and monuments with a history of their own. This lets you shape your stay around whether scenery, a specific route or local history matters most to you.
Mountain Scenery and Lake
Beliș Commune lies in the Apuseni Mountains at the foot of the Vlădeasa Mountains; forests, lakes and alpine meadows shape the landscape. The commune also encompasses part of the upper basin of the Someșul Cald, near Apuseni Natural Park, and is characterized by forests, alpine pastures and high-altitude plateaus.
Lake Beliș-Fântânele is an artificial reservoir at the meeting point of the Gilău Mountains, the Vlădeasa Mountains and Muntele Mare. The Beliș-Fântânele tourist area lies on the lake shore. The mountain backdrop and lakeside setting are two specific points to consider when getting to know the area for your trip.
One seasonal feature of the lake is the ruins of the church in Giurcuța de Jos: in dry summers, they may become visible when water levels are very low. So seeing them while planning your trip depends on both of these conditions.
Routes and Activities
The Beliș–Dealu Botii route reaches a viewpoint overlooking the Fântânele reservoir after about 7.5 kilometers. It therefore leads to a specific destination with a view of the water. If you are weighing up different priorities while planning, this viewpoint offers an alternative to an activity on the lake.
Acvatic Performer offers guided kayak and paddleboard tours at Lake Beliș-Fântânele. Stand-up paddleboard rentals are also available at Lake Beliș-Fântânele. If watersports are important to your travel plans, you can consider both options. Before your trip, check whether the guided tours are currently offered and rentals are available.
Wooden Church and Local History
The wooden church in Beliș is dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Its ship-like shape describes its architecture; the exterior is clad in shingles. Its dedication, form and materials each offer a different way to understand the building.
After the Fântânele-Beliș dam was built, the wooden church from Giurcuța de Jos was moved to Belișul Nou. This relocation adds a specific historical context to the building’s architectural features.
The memory of those killed in 1918 is also tied to two specific locations. The Monument to the Martyr Heroes of 1918 stands in the center of Beliș; another monument to those killed in 1918 was erected in 1996 in the new village of Beliș. The information distinguishes the two memorials by location; the year it was erected is also given for the monument in the new village.
Getting There and Local Cuisine
The main road connection for Beliș Commune is DJ 108C. It runs from Huedin through Călățele and connects with DN1/E60. This road sequence offers a specific starting point for planning your journey to Beliş.
For a taste of the Apuseni mountain region, Bianca Restaurant serves traditional dishes, including balmoș with mushrooms and a Transylvanian stew. The menu may change; if you are interested, check in advance which dishes are currently being served.
