Băișoara: Nature Trails, History and Handicrafts
Accommodation in Băișoara
Băișoara combines nature trails with religious history and traditional handicrafts. If you are looking for a hotel in Băișoara, you can first plan your stay around your main interests: the protected area and its trails, Orthodox landmarks, or historic and craft-related sites. This gives you concrete points of reference for planning your trip.
Natural Areas and Trails
The ROSCI0119 Muntele Mare Natura 2000 protected area was designated in 2007; two tourist trails cross the area. If you would like to include nature trails when choosing where to stay, this protected area is a specific point of reference. A description published in January 2020 names the nearby Stațiunea Muntele Băișorii as a starting point for tourist trails of varying difficulty. Check local trail conditions when planning these routes.
A 60-kilometer circular route connects Băișoara, St. Băișoara, Buscat, Muntele Boinic and Ocolișel, then returns to Băișoara. Both the length of the route and its named stops are therefore part of your planning.
The access road to Stațiunea Muntele Băișorii branches off the DJ 107M in Băișoara. It runs for 10 kilometers along the Ierța Valley to the village of Muntele Băișorii, then continues for another 8 kilometers to the resort. The two stages therefore end at different points: first at the village, then at the resort.
Church, Monastery and Local History
The Orthodox Church in Băișoara is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. Its foundation stone was laid on September 14, 1991; the church was consecrated on September 9, 2001. The interior paintings are also distinctive: they are based on freehand drawings rather than stencils. The church can therefore be understood both through its dedication and construction history and through the design of its interior.
The final site for the Sfântul Prooroc Ilie Tesviteanul Monastery was chosen in 1994. A year later, with the help of the faithful, a temporary wooden church and two monks’ cells were built. The monastery’s annual patronal feast is celebrated on July 20. This date provides a specific calendar reference if you would like to plan your trip around a religious celebration.
In the area of Săcel, which belongs to Băișoara commune, ruins can be seen at the site called “Cetate.” According to local tradition, they are attributed to the voivode Gelu. The tradition gives the ruins a historical interpretation, while Săcel provides the specific geographical reference.
Handicrafts and Cultural Events
The Vâltoarea din Băișoara is one of the few traditional installations of its kind still in operation. Mountain water is channeled through a wooden trough into a large basin made of logs. Mountain water thus flows through a wooden trough into the large log-built basin.
In connection with “Produs de Băișoara,” a small workshop run by an association was described in 2016. Women there hand-wove carpets, bags, tablecloths and other traditional products typical of the region. Also in 2016, creative workshops for adults and creative groups for children were described, focusing on old, authentic rural arts and crafts.
The commune lists “Ziua Comunei Băișoara” as a cultural event. The patronal feast celebrated annually on July 20 belongs to the Sfântul Prooroc Ilie Tesviteanul Monastery; the 20th edition of Serbările Zăpezii took place from February 8 to 11, 2024. For planning purposes, this means that the monastery feast takes place every year on July 20, while the 20th edition of Serbările Zăpezii took place from February 8 to 11, 2024.
