Bucharest Between Residences, Museums and Nature
Accommodation in Bucharest
The Dâmbovița River flows through Bucharest. The city is home to aristocratic residences and museum collections, alongside a botanical garden and Văcărești Nature Park. If you are looking for a hotel in Bucharest, you can consider whether architecture and history or nature will play a greater part in your trip—or whether you would like to combine both.
Residences and City History
Palatul Suțu is one of Bucharest’s oldest aristocratic residences. It is also one of the few buildings in the city to have remained unchanged for more than 150 years. Palatul Suțu hosts exhibitions on the history of Bucharest. Here, the architectural history of a residence and the history of the city come together.
Casa Filipescu-Cesianu is also one of the few aristocratic residences in Bucharest from the Belle Époque that has remained true to its original design. The museum at Casa Filipescu-Cesianu presents 300 years of history relating to family, childhood and private life. The grounds are used for recreation and leisure; they include an exhibition space with a lapidarium, as well as events such as concerts and theatrical performances. Individual cultural programmes may vary.
Museums and Collections
The National Museum of Romanian History houses more than 690,000 objects illustrating Romania’s history from the earliest times to the present day. The museum’s lapidarium offers a different perspective on the collections: 165 stone objects represent the Romanian cultural space in historical and stylistic terms. The Tezaurul Istoric exhibition displays more than 3,000 exceptional pieces made of precious metals and gemstones, including some unique items.
The “Dimitrie Gusti” National Village Museum opened to the public on 17 May 1936. For a visit focused on architectural and urban history, a range of perspectives can therefore be explored side by side: aristocratic residences, historical collections and the history of the Village Museum.
Seasonal markets also add to the cultural offering. The Mărțișor Market at the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant features creative reinterpretations of the traditional spring amulet and practical craft workshops. An autumn farmers’ market at the same museum showcases craft and culinary goods or demonstrations, including pickled vegetables, jams and honey. Dates, programmes and participation may vary; check the latest information if you are interested.
Sightseeing and Tours
The Romanian Athenaeum can be visited on a sightseeing tour outside rehearsal and concert times. Access is via No. 1 Benjamin Franklin Street and requires the purchase of a visitor ticket. As visiting hours and access conditions may change, it is advisable to check them before your visit. For groups, the Philharmonic may offer guided tours of the Athenaeum in Romanian or English by prior arrangement.
A tour of Palatul Parlamentului takes visitors through four halls and provides access to the art and architecture collections on display there.
Garden and Nature Park
The “Dimitrie Brandza” Botanical Garden covers 18.2 hectares. Its outdoor areas include sections devoted to rare plants and the flora of Dobruja, as well as a rose garden and an iris garden. Indoor facilities include greenhouses, a herbarium, a library and an ecological education centre. The garden has around 4,000 living plant taxa; the General Herbarium contains more than 520,000 specimens. Individual displays and collection figures may change over time.
Văcărești Nature Park has two themed trails: one focused on biodiversity and the other on the history of the site. The park provides living, resting, sheltering and nesting conditions for more than 170 bird species. A visit therefore brings both the diversity of nature and the history of the area into focus.
Getting Around the City
BucharestCityTour offers a hop-on hop-off service with 15 stops where visitors can explore cafés and museums in Bucharest. The number of stops and service information may change in future seasons; check the latest details before planning your trip.
