Șercaia offers a range of reasons to stay: its riverside location, a landscape dotted with daffodils, and a number of historic churches and traditions. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to consider in advance which of these aspects interests you most. Some geographic details about the river, railway and road refer to the village, while others refer to the commune’s territory.

Rivers and a Daffodil Landscape

Șercaia lies at the confluence of the Șercaia River and the Olt. The Olt flows north of the village of Șercaia and south of the village of Hălmeag; it crosses the territory of Șercaia commune for about 7.5 kilometers. The village’s location at the confluence and the Olt’s course through the commune can therefore be considered as two separate geographic references.

Dumbrava Vadului, also known as Poiana cu Narcise, is also located in the commune. The area covers about 400 hectares. Thousands of daffodils of the species Narcissus stellarus grow among widely spaced oak trees. For a trip focused on landscape and plants, the name, area and described tree cover offer specific points of reference.

The Festivalul narciselor is a date to note on your calendar: it has been held in Șercaia commune every year since 2001, on the Sunday closest to May 21. If you’d like to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact date in advance.

Churches and Dated Buildings

Several different dates are associated with the Evangelical buildings. The Evangelical rectory in Șercaia is dated to 1839–1840. The bell tower of the Evangelical rectory complex is attributed to the years 1691 and 1819, while the Evangelical church is dated to 1868–1875. The Evangelical church is dedicated to Saint Catherine. These dates refer to different buildings and parts of the complex, not to a single construction year.

The other churches add to this chronological overview: the Greek Catholic Church of Sf. Gheorghe is dated to 1793, and the Orthodox Church of Sf. Nicolae to 1928. A local description from 2022 highlights the sky-blue ceiling painted with gold stars at Sf. Gheorghe. For travelers interested in architectural history, these different dates can be considered alongside a specific detail of the interior.

Decorating Easter Eggs and a Local Collection

The decoration of Easter eggs is called “închistritul” or “împistritul” in Șercaia, where it has long been regarded as a tradition and an art. Girls and women learn it within their families or from particularly skilled individuals. An article from 2022 reported that at the time, several women in Șercaia had mastered and practiced this art. The tradition is characterized not only by its name but also by the described way it is passed down within the village.

Children’s workshops held at the Centrul social-cultural al bisericii „Sfântul Nicolae” in Șercaia are also documented for 2022; children were introduced to the art of decorating eggs. A 2023 cultural program lists the Colecția Muzeală de Etnografie și Istorie Locală at the Centrul Social-Cultural „Sf. Nicolae” in Șercaia. The workshop information refers to 2022; it does not describe a current event date.

Rail, Road and Choosing a Hotel

The single-track Brașov–Sibiu railway line crosses the territory of Șercaia commune from east to west for about 11 kilometers. There are two passenger stations there: Gara Șercaia and Halta Șercaia. One of the two stations also serves freight traffic. National Road 73A connects Șercaia with Râșnov; 5.2 kilometers of this road run through the commune’s territory. These details distinguish between connections and stretches of route at commune level and those associated with the village of Șercaia.

If you’re considering Șercaia as a base for a hotel stay, decide in advance what you’d like to focus on: nature and the riverside location, or churches and local traditions. This lets you choose a location to suit your interests without grouping different sights or transport connections under a single feature.
